The Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management is a multi-disciplinary department that addresses critical research questions related to human dimensions of natural and built environments, livable communities, youth development and physical activity, and tourism and economic development of rural and urban areas. The mission of PRTM is to advance and disseminate scholarship concerning management and use of natural and cultural resources for recreation, tourism, and sport through research, teaching, and public engagement. PRTM faculty enjoy a vibrant scholarly environment supportive of innovative and high impact social science research.

Description: Tenure-track nine-month, full-time appointment with responsibilities for research (45%), teaching (45%), and service (10%). The position is available August 2013.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in parks and recreation management, sport management, community development, rural sociology, or related field is required.

The person in this position will work at the interface between active living and sustainable community development. The successful candidate must have two to four years at the assistant professor rank and a demonstrated ability to identify and address research problems of significance to the scientific and practitioner community (e.g., environmental sustainability and sport, governance and organizational behavior, sport and community health, the role of sport in local and regional economic development). In particular, the successful candidate must have demonstrated ability to secure external research funding and successfully perform on research grants; demonstrated skill in qualitative, quantitative, and integrated research approaches; evidence of successfully advising and mentoring graduate students; and, a demonstrated ability to engage public and private stakeholders with an interest in community recreation and sport management. Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to engage in interdisciplinary collaborations with research faculty at NCSU and other institutions. PRTM is building a unique capacity to conduct virtual reality research and other forms of environmental simulation in a new state-of-the-art visualization lab. Candidates with interest or expertise in applying environmental simulation to their research are strongly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will exhibit strong oral and written communication skills evidenced by a strong publication record in the leading peer-reviewed scientific journals relevant to their research. Additionally, a commitment to excellence in teaching and knowledge of, and preferably a demonstrated ability to use web-based learning technology are fundamental to this position. Finally, experience in developing and working in collaborative teams with other faculty, professionals, and graduate students is essential.

Responsibilities: Develop an externally funded research program addressing significant issues including but not limited to how sport contributes to livable communities, healthy living, environmental sustainability, and/or sustainable community development. Teach one or two undergraduate courses in the area of sport management and a graduate course in the candidate?s area of expertise. Participation and leadership, as appropriate, in faculty governance is expected.
