HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Parmount shows its character with comeback win over Troy

NONLEAGUE: Pirates run for 305 yards, overcome 35-28 deficit with two late TDs.

| More prep sports

PARAMOUNT - Paramount High will take a full head of steam into the beginning of San Gabriel Valley League play next week.

Senior running backs Deonte Dixon and Alex Turner helped make sure of that Friday night by combining for 305 rushing yards to lead the Pirates to an exciting 42-35 nonleague win over visiting Troy.

Paramount (4-1) posted its fourth consecutive win, turning around a 35-28 deficit with fourth-quarter touchdowns on an 82-yard pass from quarterback Lamont Odom to Tyrell Davis and a 9-yard run by Dixon with 1:31 to play that erased a 35-34 lead by Troy.

"We were resilient," coach Matt Howard said. "Every time we answered (Troy)."

Paramount, which will open SGVL play against Gahr next week, probably will continue to run the ball. "That's what we lean on," Howard said.

They leaned on it from the get-go, as Turner scored two first quarter TDs on runs of 29 and 5 yards.

Troy (3-2) came back in the second quarter to make it 14-6, but Paramount took a 21-6 lead on a TD pass from Odom to Devonte Dixon (Deonte's twin brother) from 13 yards out.

The Warriors responded with two touchdowns to make it 21-21 at the half.

Dallas Parent scored them both and in fact had all five Troy touchdowns. He gained 172 yards on 26 carries.

Parent opened the second half with a 99-yard kickoff return. But the

Pirates came right back to make it 28-28 as Deonte Dixon scored on a 67-yard run.

Troy made it 35-28 on the first play of the final quarter.

Odom completed 11 of 16 passes for 188 yards.

"Lamont made some big plays, and that adds to our offensive game," Howard said

He was a four-year starter on the varsity baseball team and was captain for the 1955 and 1956 seasons. Elected to the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996, he was an outstanding shortstop, making only two errors in two years at UMaine.

Maxcy, a former high school and college athlete, was a longtime educator, assistant principal and coach before his retirement. He lettered at Scarborough High School in track and field, cross country, swimming and basketball. He was a member of the freshman track team at Bates College, transferring to UMaine his sophomore year, where he lettered in both indoor and outdoor track and field. He coached and taught at Foxcroft Academy and Brewer High School and held administrative positions at Hermon High and Brewer until retiring last June.

McNally, a Gardiner native and 1970 Gardiner High grad, has been teaching for 33 years. She played three sports in high school and four in college. She became Gardiner?s field hockey coach in 1979 and her teams went on to compile a record of 384-134-21 with four Eastern Maine titles and two state crowns. She is a founding member of the Maine State Field Hockey Association and also also coached basketball and softball at the high school.

Osbourne, a native of Hull, Yorkshire, England, settled in Waterville in 1957, and became a founder of soccer in the Waterville area. He volunteered to begin league play at the Boys Club in Waterville in the late 1950s and continued into the 1980s. He serves on the Heritage Circle, the Alfond Boys and Girls Club and YMCA of Greater Waterville.

A glitter-free, elegant Cebu wedding

NEWLYWEDS Kaye and ?Javi? Sala

If there was a wedding I?ve seen that represented the style of today?s Filipino bride, it must have been the wedding of Cebu couple Kaye Luym and Javier Sala. It was nonchalantly elegant, simple, simply cool.

Apparently the couple, particularly the bride, didn?t want frills. There was no glitter?not in the bride?s Rosa Clara (she wanted off-the-rack) gown, not in the Arcy Gayatin gowns of the bridal entourage, or in those of the principal sponsors.

On the arm of her father Kelly, a beaming Kaye strode down the aisle of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Cebu, her hair gathered at the back with a vintage-looking peineta. Her tulle veil was drawn back to reveal her radiant face. The bride obviously didn?t want any veil covering her face?you knew right away this would be a nontraditional, if not hip, wedding.

The long ensembles of the secondary sponsors were either in green or blue. The Gayatin gowns were beautifully draped, embellished only with monochromatic fabric cutouts.

THE NEWLYWEDS with their parents Kelly and Elvira Luym (far left and second from left), and Jose Sala and daughter Carina standing in for her mom Susan who had fallen ill

Kaye was in a strapless gown with voluminously layered skirt?the look was intricate yet simple. If the bride wants to wear it to another dressy event in the future, she very well could; today?s Filipino brides are indeed practical.

The church?s decoration was spare and green so that it brought out the cathedral?s ornate and rich architecture. My first time to see the cathedral, I didn?t know it was that beautiful, its altar majestic in gleaming gold.

Cebu?s style maven Teresin Mendezona tastefully used lush foliage?hedge-like fern arrangements flanked the entrance to the aisle, accented with white blooms. The aisle was lined with white roses and orchids nestled in green ferns. Medium-height trees were set up at both sides of the church.

THE NEWLYWEDS with principal sponsors

The Radisson Blu?s vast ballroom was an elegant setting of tall crystal candelabras and white blooms. Candelabras have become wedding style staples?usually carved wood or faux silver; this was a rare instance we saw brilliant crystal candelabras. They were non-obtrusive and elegant, and with the dainty white blooms, lent the whole place radiance.

Kaye, our Lifestyle columnist, is Canada-educated and with friend Cybill, has an events firm in Cebu. She and ?Javi? have been an item for about four years?one of Cebu?s young stylish couples?before they tied the knot. Kaye is an only child, and her mother Elvira?s brief remarks at the reception drew chuckles from the guests.

WHITE, crystal chandeliers and dainty blooms are Teresin Mendezona?s style statement.

Elvira said how she and husband Kelly are so proud of their only child Kaye, who not only grew up well, but also ?never got arrested or got ink on her body??referring to today?s party animals and their tattooed bodies.

Indeed, Elvira and Kelly?s rearing manner of an only child?a daughter, at that?is something other parents might want to emulate. I remember Elvira telling me how, at the onset, they wanted her daughter to be able to fend for herself??what if we?re not around?? she said?so they packed her off to study in Canada. Indeed, empowering a child to lead a responsible, independent life is the best thing parents can give their children, be they an only child or not.

BUNNY Ludo-Alcordo and Marco Protacio

Javi comes from a brood of three and his older brother, best man Mikel, had laughs recalling their basketball games and other jaunts while growing up. He?s the son of Jose and Susan (formerly Montenegro) Sala.

Indeed, it was heartwarming to see the union of two of Cebu?s old families?a celebration that was warm because the number of guests was just right, just kin and friends.

Everybody was elegantly formal; it must have been one of the rare occasions we didn?t spot any fashion victim.

Elvira was in a deep red Marchesa?a simple, unadorned sheath that?s subtly cut at the waist, thus emphasizing her slim figure. It was stark yet drop-dead glamorous. Her only accent: Hans Brumann diamond chandelier earrings which Mr. Brumann and wife Maria brought themselves to Cebu on the eve of the wedding. The jewelry is, in fact, an heirloom?the master jeweler reset the diamonds from Elvira?s wedding and engagement jewelry, into this pair of earrings.

Cybill Gayatin

It was a special day for Mr. Brumann?that Aug. 11 was his birthday, and he enjoyed celebrating it in Cebu with old friends like the Luyms. The Brumann couple danced the night away, and so did friends Marissa Fernan and Marco Protacio.

Marco is practically an adopted Cebuano?he was general manager of Waterfront Hotel and Casino for 10 years, during which he livened up Cebu?s social scene with A-List parties, including Inquirer Lifestyle?s Cebu edition of Face-Off. Marco left the hotel two years ago. He is joining Ben Chan?s Bench group?not the fashion retail unit.

Not known to many is the fact that the Swiss-born Hans Brumann adopted Filipino citizenship 40 years ago, when he was starting out as a jeweler in the Philippines. Through the decades, he and wife Maria have trained and supported jewelry artisans and their families. The couple support scholars.

That night Maria wore very special jewelry?the iconic award-winning Brumann design. It was a necklace of platinum wire diamonds in a white gold frame. The piece was well-received in a jewelry contest in Europe 40 years ago, where it stayed for that long a time and resurfaced only recently.

HANS Brumann blows his birthday cake at lunch in Cebu, flanked by wife Maria and Elvira Luym.

The Radisson Blu left no stone unturned to give Kaye and Javi a truly sumptuous reception: The buffet had various stations, from Italian to Cebu fare, Japanese, and seafood; the lobsters were a hit.

The principal sponsors were Emil Montenegro, Marco Protacio, Stephen Tan, Francisco Tan, Nobuhiro Onda, Roberto Aboitiz, Victor Luym, and the women?Chona Montinola, Teresin Mendezona, Marissa Fernan, Barbara Tan, Margot Osme?a, Carolina Montenegro, Carmencita Gotauco.

Best men were Mikel Sala and Tristan Aboitiz. Maids of honor were Kirsteen Lim and Cybill Gayatin. Groomsmen were Shigejiro Onda, Domingo Rojo and Daniel Rojo. Bridesmaids were Beverly Tiu, Anna Imperial, Carina Sala. Junior bridesmaid was Cassandra Montenegro. Secondary sponsors were Raymund Basubas, Marelle Sala, Miguel Osme?a, Rowena Lim, Petrious Dakay and Jen Wladichuk. Flower girls were Ema Onda, Isabelle Fernan and Natalia Esca?o.

Celebrant was the Jesuit priest Ernesto Javier. Other participants in the matrimonial mass were Marielle Montenegro (lector), Manny Fernan (first reading), Rachelle Luym (responsorial psalm), Alfonso Montenegro (second reading), Bunny Ludo-Alcordo (prayers of the faithful), and for the offertory?Elvira Luym and Jose Sala, May Lim and Leslie Alajas, James Montenegro and Sandro Aboitiz.

Another monk

The Philippine fashion industry knows Giovanni Sanna, the master tailor who manned the famous Pierre Cardin boutique in Manila in the ?70s. We had a surprise text message giving us the news that Sanna is now Dom Giovanni Vincenzo of St. Scholastica Monastery in Subiaco, Italy.

Sanna has been a Benedictine monk for 15 years now?a fact I don?t think is known to many.

In the ?70s, Sanna was closely associated with Manila?s icons like Chona Kasten. He was so well-liked, a good friend to everyone. Perhaps not many knew that he had gone back to Italy to be a monk.

We just knew about it after he sent his regards to Dom Martin, another Benedictine monk who was one of Philippine fashion?s bright stars in the ?70s and the ?80s when he was known as Gang Gomez. Dom Martin is now based at the Monastery of Transfiguration in Bukidnon. He sent his regards through San Beda Abbott Tarcisio Ma. Narciso, OSB, who ran into Dom Giovanni in the Italian monastery during a recent abbotts? meeting there.

You get curious?what is it about the glitzy world of fashion that sends a few of its stellar talents to the monastery?

Brain-Mind Blog: Benjamin Franklin's System for Self-Improvement

Benjamin Franklin came up with a system for self-improvement.? The first thing that strikes you is the methodical way he sought to improve himself. He made a list of virtues.? Number 1 ("Temperance"): not to pig-out at meals or to get drunk.? Number 2 ("Silence"): not to blabber too much in conversation.? Number 3 ("Order): to become more organized at home and at work. He listed thirteen such virtues, and each week he would focus primarily on one of them.? In thirteen weeks, he noticed great improvement in all of them.? Except for the last - "Humility". The problem was that he found himself taking pride in his own humility.?

Over the years, like Franklin, I've sought to improve myself.? I've never approached it in such a structured manner, but Franklin-esque systems and recipes do appeal to me.? Was Franklin being overly-cognitive in his systematic approach?? There may be some over-thinking here. A more flexible, intuitive approach to life has its appeal as well.? But while Franklin was cognitive and systematic, he was also creative and adventuresome.? He was what Myers-Briggs would call a "Thinker" rather than a "Feeler". (An Extroverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Judger, I imagine).

There was a time when I'd have seized enthusiastically upon Franklin's system and set up my list of virtues to work on.? The virtues on my list may not have been identical to Franklin's, but I suppose one could plug in any "virtues" and work away at them Franklin-style. The idea still appeals to me. But nowadays I don't have the appetite to go whole hog on this kind of thing.?? A psychiatrist and researcher, Bruce Wexler, wrote that during our youth, our brains adapt themselves to the environments we find ourselves in. But as adults, we try to shape our environment to complement the way our brains have become. Benjamin Franklin came up with his self-improvement system at a time when his brain was young and highly 'plastic', ready for molding.?? Instead of leaving the molding to chance, Franklin took charge of it himself.?? And of course, as an adult, he played a key role in the American Revolution and the founding of the new government; perhaps shaping his environment to conform to his already-molded brain.

At this point in my life, I'm more or less happy with the brain and behavioral patterns I've acquired.? I don't have the energy for self-improvement lists. I'm not taking part in any revolutions either. But who knows.? There are still some "virtues" I'd like to work on.

Mo. AG sues three mortgage rescue companies

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (Legal Newsline) - Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster filed three separate lawsuits on Wednesday against individuals and their companies for allegedly misleading consumers with mortgage-modification schemes.

Heartland Loss Mitigation LLC and owner Colleen Kelly, Mader Law Group LLC and owner Eric Mader, and CAPLAW, P.A. and owner Jim Caplan were named as defendants in the three lawsuits. The companies allegedly engaged in multiple unfair or deceptive practices.

"Today's lawsuits continue my office's efforts to help Missouri homeowners who are trying to keep their homes as they work their way out of tough situations," Koster said. "Companies that mislead consumers trying to save their homes from foreclosure should stay out of Missouri."

The defendants allegedly: Engaged in the unauthorized practice of law in Missouri, failed to place legally required notifications of homeowners' rights in contracts between defendants and homeowners, persuaded consumers to stop mortgage payments to their lenders by promising successful loan modifications, failed to refund consumers for loan-modification services not received, failed to provide the loan-modification services paid for by consumers, and required and received advance payment for loan-modification services.

The lawsuits are a part of Koster's continuing effort to protect consumers from businesses that advertise and offer illegal mortgage-modification services.

Enjoying Your Deck, Patio and Porch Through ... - Home Improvement

Now that fall is officially upon us, days are gradually getting shorter and evenings chillier. That doesn?t mean that you should stop enjoying time outside on your deck. On the contrary, this is the perfect time to take advantage of any nice weather, revel in the fall colors and breathe in as much fresh air as possible before winter sets in and confines us indoors.

? Start out by giving your deck, patio or porch a good sweeping and washing to clean off the dust, dirt and cobwebs that may have accumulated over the spring and summer. The furniture could probably be wiped down too, while you?re at it. If your deck is worn out and not worth getting it all set up for fall, this is a great time of year to have your deck builder come out and give you a fresh start.

? If you depend on your trees and plants to give you privacy around your deck, you may need to create privacy in other ways once their leaves start to drop. You can set up an outdoor privacy screen or reconfigure the furniture in your lounging area to form a more intimate and private setting.

? It?s easy to cozy things up with cushions and throws. Use weather-resistant fabrics unless you plan on bringing cushions and blankets in every night or unless you have a weatherproof storage box that you place them in to keep them dry.

? Even a hammock is enjoyable at this time of year if you bring out a blanket. Look up and enjoy the color of the leaves on the trees.

? Place outdoor space heaters around the seating areas. If you have a fire pit or outdoor fireplace, now is the time to clean out the accumulated ashes from the summer and make sure the wood box is full.

? Change out your decor for more seasonal items. Lanterns, gourds and earth-tones are good for setting a cozy fall mood. Since your garden may no longer be the showstopper that was is in the summer, you may need to create a focal point to replace what is no longer in season. Potted mums are a lovely way to add color to a deck or patio at this time of year.

? Since days are getting shorter and quality of light is changing, consider making changes to your outdoor lighting. Choose your lighting according to how you use each area of the deck or yard and how much light is required for that area. Add candles, lanterns, outdoor lamps and landscape lighting for ambiance. You can also place light pucks or strands of light under handrails, deck railing or stairs. A spotlight above the grilling area is helpful so you?re sure your dinner is cooked to perfection.

If you don?t yet have a great patio, porch or deck that calls you outside to enjoy the season, it may just be time to get working on your next home improvement or call in a professional deck builder to get it done so that you can sit back and enjoy the fall colors and refreshing evenings.

Self Improvement | A Review: Songs of My Life...Slightly Out of Tune ...

By Irene Conlan -

Sometimes we just need to ?let down our hair,? talk about who we really are and have a good laugh. From the moment I picked up Susan Dintino?s book, Songs of My Life?Slightly Out of Tune, until I read the last line I was fascinated with her openness, her humor, and her insights into her own behavior. She takes us to her highest highs and her lowest lows in a way that is inspiring and always entertaining. She has walked the crooked path of self improvement and now takes the time to share what she has learned with those of us who are still trudging along. We can all learn from her insights, her authenticity and her wonderful wit. Author, talk show host, meditation teacher, wife, mother and an empowered woman, Susan will keep your attention and make you wish for more.

?

If you don?t know how to laugh at your own ?stuff? take a lesson from Susan who not only laughs about it but grows from it. She seriously learned not to take everything seriously and we can all learn from that. Anyone who thinks ?it?s all about them? should read this book and anyone who has forgotten how to laugh should read this as a refresher course.

Pick it up and? you won?t want to put it down. I recommend this book. Period.

Conjure Is a Super-Fast App Launcher for Android [Video]

Conjure Is a Super-Fast App Launcher for AndroidConjure Is a Super-Fast App Launcher for Android Android: Conjure makes launching apps, accessing settings, and even placing phone calls as easy as typing the first few letters of the application you want to open, option you want to toggle, or the contact you want to call.

Once you start using Conjure, you'll get a feel for how fast it is. The best comparison I can make is that it's much like Launchy or Alfred, in that a few letters usually brings up the item you want, whether it's a person in your contacts, an app you want to open, or a settings or options pane you want to access. The video above shows off some of Conjure's features, but it's hard to explain how fast the app is, and how quickly it learns your commonly opened applications and settings.

Conjure doesn't just open apps and call people for you?you can use it to adjust your device's volume, search the web, and more. If your device has a search button, long-pressing it will bring up Conjure. It's $1.99 at Google Play, but for your money you get a great application launcher that can save you real time if you hate swiping through your app drawer or home screens to get to something specific.

Uruguay poised to legalize abortion

MONTEVIDEO, Uruguay (AP) ? Uruguay's congress appeared ready on Tuesday to legalize abortion, a groundbreaking move in Latin America, where no country save Cuba has made abortions accessible to all women during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Compromises made to secure votes disappointed both sides of the abortion divide, which gathered in protest. Once it gets through Uruguay's lower house, the measure would go back to the Senate for approval of changes, but President Jose Mujica has said he will allow it to become law.

The measure would give women the right to a legal abortion during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy, and decriminalize later-term abortions when the mother's life is at risk or when the fetus is so deformed that it wouldn't survive after birth. In cases of rape, abortions would be legal during the first 14 weeks.

The goal is to reduce the number of illegal abortions in Uruguay, Congressman Ivan Posada of the center-left Independent Party told his fellow lawmakers Tuesday. Posada wrote the measure and is expected to provide a key 50th vote against the opposition of 49 other lawmakers.

"They talk of 30,000 a year, a hypothetical number, but whatever the number is, it's quite dramatic for a country where 47,000 children are born each year," Posada explained earlier in an Associated Press interview.

A poll this month showed 52 percent of Uruguayans would vote to legalize abortion if the question were put to the people, while 34 percent would vote against it. The survey of 802 people nationwide by the CIFRA consulting firm had a 3.4 percentage point margin of error.

Compromises include requiring women seeking abortions to justify their request before a panel of at least three professionals ? a gynecologist, psychologist and social worker ? and listen to advice about alternatives including adoption and support services if should she decide to keep the baby.

Then, she must wait five more days "to reflect" on the consequences before the procedure.

"It's important that the woman who decides to have an abortion attend this meeting where she will be informed, where they'll explain all the options including alternatives that she is free to choose from," Posada told the AP.

The review panel should obtain the father's point of view, but only if the woman agrees. Women under 18 must show parental consent, but they can seek approval from a judge instead if they're unwilling or unable to involve their parents in the decision.

The measure also allows entire private health care institutions, as well as individual health care providers, to decline to perform abortions.

Such requirements raised objections from Amnesty International and other groups, which say layers of bureaucracy will create barriers and delay abortions until more than 12 weeks have passed, thus forcing women and health care providers into criminal territory.

"This is not the law for which we fought for more than 25 years," complained Marta Agunin, who directs Women and Health, a non-governmental organization in Uruguay.

Also opposed are Uruguay's Catholic and evangelical institutions, which along with public hospitals provide much of the available health care in Uruguay.

A statement from Uruguay's Catholic University says it makes no sense to punish a woman for killing a fetus that is 12 weeks and 1 day old, but to decriminalize abortions before then. Conservatives also object to the removal of a proposal to require the father's consent before any abortion.

Cuba, which decriminalizes abortions in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy, is the only country in Latin America where legal abortion is common. Argentina and Colombia allow it only in cases of rape or when the mother's life is endangered. Colombia also allows it when there is proof of fetal malformation. Mexico City has legalized first-trimester abortions, but there are restrictions in most other parts of the country.

Many countries ban abortions under any conditions.

Uruguay's lawmakers have no desire to make their country a destination for women from other countries seeking abortions. The measure says only Uruguayan citizens and women who can prove at least one year's residency can apply. "This is a solution for those who live here, not that Uruguay becomes a place that attracts people from other countries for this procedure," Posada told the AP.

Opposition Deputy Javier Garcia of the center-right National Party accused lawmakers of treating living embryos as if they were "disposable," which he equated with murder.

The margin for the law was razor-thin on Tuesday after Deputy Andres Lima of the ruling Broad Front coalition said he would refuse to vote. With Posada joining the coalition, the measure appeared headed for passage by a 50-49 vote margin.

Dr. Marie Gonzalez, bioethicist at the University of the Republic, called the measure "evil" and vowed to work to persuade her fellow gynecologists to refuse to perform the procedure if it becomes law.

"The embryo-fetus is a human being, and as such has rights, like the human right to live," she said.

Shocker: Nintendo Wii U said to be region-locked

Shocker Nintendo Wii U will be regionlocked

The forthcoming Wii U console from Nintendo will be region-locked, just like the original Wii and the 3DS, Nintendo UK told Eurogamer. That means you won't be able to play obscure (or early) Japanese imports on it, and customs officials won't get anything to break up the monotony of seized cigars and bushmeat.

"Homeland" triumphs as Emmys go for dose of reality

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Homeland" toppled "Mad Men" to win the top drama prize on Sunday as the Primetime Emmy awards favored politics and 21st century tensions over shows set in bygone eras.

"Modern Family," ABC's show about the chaotic lives of three related couples and their children, won best comedy series for a third year and supporting actor Emmys for Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen, as well as a directing award.

"I am praying that everyone doesn't get sick of us," joked executive producer Steve Levitan.

Backstage, Stonestreet joked, "We know that eventually it will not be this way and you will hate us all."

"Homeland," a post 9/11 psychological thriller about a returning Iraq war hero turned by al Qaeda, won best drama after one season on cable channel Showtime. It also took home trophies for best writing and best acting for its two leads, Claire Danes and Damian Lewis, for a total of six including technical awards.

"Homeland," said to be one of President Barack Obama's favorite TV programs, brought to an end the reign of AMC's stylish 1960s advertising show "Mad Men," which left Sunday's Emmy ceremony empty-handed.

It was the biggest shutout in Emmy history for "Mad Men," which had gone into Sunday's awards as joint top nominee with 17 nominations.

"Homeland" also beat popular "Downton Abbey," about aristocrats and their servants in an English country house, and HBO's medieval fantasy series "Game of Thrones," in what was the first year that all the nominated best drama series came from cable television.

AGE OF ANXIETY

Danes, who plays a bipolar CIA operative in a cat-and-mouse game with Lewis's sleeper agent, said she believed "Homeland" had succeeded with viewers and critics because it was neither preachy nor overtly political.

"We are a little startled. I don't think anyone was expecting to be recognized this way starting off," Danes told reporters backstage.

(The show) "doesn't take a very biased position (but) it does speak to our feelings of anxiety and unrest right now, in the sense that we're in a new era where the enemy is not so clear."

Danes said it was "way cool" that Obama is a fan. "I think it speaks to the relevancy of the show, and it's hugely validating," she added.

"Homeland" returns for a second season on September 30, with an opening episode set against the fictional bombing by Israel of Iranian nuclear facilities and the global tensions that ensue.

American politics did figure strongly in other Emmy races. "Game Change," the HBO story of Sarah Palin's entry into the 2008 U.S. vice presidential race, was also a big winner, taking the Emmy for best miniseries, writing, directing and acting for star Julianne Moore.

"Wow, I feel so validated because Sarah Palin gave me a big thumbs down!" Moore said while accepting her first Emmy.

Backstage Moore thanked actress and Palin impersonator Tina Fey, and journalist Katie Couric for what she called their "incredible influence" on the 2008 elections. Couric interviewed Palin in 2008 in what became a cultural and political landmark after the encounter was spoofed by Fey on "Saturday Night Live."

In what was seen as a tight race for lead comedy actress, Julia Louis-Dreyfus beat "Girls" star Lena Dunham, Amy Poehler, "New Girl" Zooey Deschanel and Tina Fey with her turn as a frustrated U.S. vice president in the wickedly satirical HBO political show "Veep."

"It's a bit mystifying to me because people say this show is a comedy, but I don't see anything funny about me being vice president of the United States," the former "Seinfeld" star quipped.

POLITICAL JOKES

With the presidential elections less than two months away, Emmy show host Jimmy Kimmel got the festivities off to a biting and topical start in an opening monologue.

Kimmel joked that U.S. television was "the only American product the Chinese haven't figured out how to make."

As for the sprawling grandeur of "Downton Abbey," which is set in an aristocratic country house at the beginning of the 20th century, Kimmel quipped, "It really gives you a sense of what it must have been like to grow up in (U.S. Republican presidential candidate) Mitt Romney's house."

"Two and A Half Men's" Jon Cryer was the surprise winner in the comedy actor category, beating fellow CBS nominee and double Emmy winner Jim Parsons of geeky show "The Big Bang Theory."

Stand-up comedian Louis C.K. went home with his first two Emmys - one for writing for his FX show "Louie", in which he also stars as a divorced dad, and another for directing his own TV stand-up special.

Oscar-winning actor Kevin Costner won an Emmy in his first role for television. Costner starred in the popular History channel miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys," about a legendary feud between two 19th century families, while Tom Berenger took a supporting actor Emmy for his role in the show.

"I'm a writer-orientated actor and when I find the writing, I don't care what medium it sits," Costner told reporters on Sunday of his move to television.

"The Amazing Race" won for the best reality series Emmy for the ninth time, while Tom Bergeron won best reality host for "Dancing with the Stars."

5 Iraqi soldiers killed in roadside bomb explosion

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Five Iraqi soldiers were killed in a roadside bomb explosion north of Baghdad on Saturday, Iraqi officials said, as suspected Sunni militants, seeking to undermine the Shiite-led government continue to target the country's security forces.

A police official in Salahuddin province said the attack on a two-vehicle military convoy occurred early in the afternoon near the predominantly Sunni town of Duluiyah, 75 kilometers (45 miles) north of Baghdad. Four other soldiers were wounded in the blast, the official said.

Doctors in the town's hospital confirmed the death toll. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.

Meanwhile, a spokesman for the Iraqi government, Ali al-Moussawi, said authorities will conduct random searches of Syrian-bound Iranian planes on suspicion that they might be carrying weapons to the war-torn nation.

Iran is an ally to Syrian President Bashar Assad, whose military has battled opposition forces during an 18-month-old uprising that has become a civil war.

U.S. officials have accused Baghdad of allowing Iran to fly weapons to Assad's forces through Iraqi airspace. Iraq denies the claims.

Al-Moussawi told The Associated Press that Baghdad has informed Tehran of their decision to search Iranian planes, flying to Syria, "if we have suspicions on the nature of the cargo."

On Friday, Iraq prevented a North Korean plane from entering its airspace on suspicion it was carrying weapons to Syria.

North Korea is a long time Assad ally.

iPhone 5 VS: What Android and Windows Need to Fix

iPhone 5 VS: What Android and Windows Need to FixiPhone 5 vs this phone, iPhone 5 vs that phone. Since its release the iPhone 5 has been compared to other phones on the market, both Android and Windows. And while there are a lot of things that each respective phone does better than the others, there are fundamental issues that each need to resolve in order to gain more of an edge over the iPhone 5.

Windows

Windows phones haven?t had the greatest reputation the past couple of years but the Nokia Lumia 920 may be looking to change that. In the ?iPhone 5 vs Lumia 920? debate, the Lumia has a clear advantage when it comes to things like camera quality and even screen size and resolution. But there is something that is definitely holding back the Lumia 920 and Windows phones in general. The Windows platform has yet to create a formidable apps market comparable to that of Android or iOS. Maybe Windows 8 will help attract more developers, but Microsoft?s pricing plan for apps may become an issue for consumers as they would be more expensive than current iOS and Android apps.

Android

It?s hard to generalize about Android phones and how they compare to the iPhone because there are so many of them and each has varying screen size, processing power, camera quality and other features. But there is something that the iPhone undoubtedly has over Android and it has to do with the operating systems. Most people turn to preference when looking at iOS or Android but there is something that I think even Android users are annoyed about. When iOS 6 came out, owners of iOS devices everywhere had the option to update. Android fans on the other hand aren?t as lucky. Android updates tend to roll out in a more fragmented sequence with some phones receiving updates sooner than others. Some phones are still running Android 2.3 because updates have not been made available. What Android gains in having an open source approach it loses in being able to easily manage and distribute.

Neither of these problems is permanent and each can definitely be improved upon. And when the Windows platform has strong apps and Android updates have a more streamlined updating process, phones like the Lumia 920 and Galaxy SIII will have a stronger edge in future ?iPhone 5 vs? debates.

Fantasy Football Mailbag: 9/22/2012

Feb 5, 2012; Indianapolis, IN, USA; New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez (81) celebrates with wide receiver Wes Welker (83) after scoring a touchdown during the second half of Super Bowl XLVI against the New York Giants at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

Need help with preparing for your fantasy football league? The Fantasy Guru is here once again to give you a few tips on how to play the crazy game of fantasy football.

Today we have a special Saturday edition of the fantasy mailbag and, to make up for being a day later than usual, I?ll be answering two extra questions this week so we have seven questions to get through. So, let?s get on with it shall we?

Q: Aaron Hernandez is out for the season ? is now the time to go get Wes Welker? ? Jan Young from Minneapolis, Minnesota

A:?The situation in New England has been a difficult one to interpret to date. It appears that the contract issues with Welker may have had some effect on his usage and this follows along with the way the Patriots dealt with Randy Moss in 2011. While the Hernandez injury is a major change, for me the most important issue for Welker?s possible usage is the failure of new weapon Brandon Lloyd to get on the same page as Tom Brady despite his familiarity with offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels. Lloyd has seen a vast majority of targets head his way in the first two weeks but there appears to have been a certain disconnect with Brady as while Lloyd has 13 receptions he has had 21 targets ? a somewhat poor turnover. If it were just the Hernandez injury, I?d be sceptical. With the issues Lloyd is having, this strengthens the case. I think it?s worth trying to get Welker at perhaps 80% of his draft day value.

Q: Cam Newton looked awful on Thursday night. Is there reason for fantasy owners to be concerned? ? Lester Prescott from Little Rock, Arkansas

A:?I was watching and commentating on that game and I honestly think there is reason for worry to an extent. There were a few factors against Cam on the night including the constant rush of the exceptional Giants defensive line but also the way his offensive line seemed to collapse at times with several missed blocking assignments. With that said, I saw a number of poor decisions from Cam as at times it looked like he failed to go through his progressions properly even when he had time to and forced passes that just weren?t there. Add to this the fact that this was a Giants team that had serious issues in the secondary and I think there is plenty to worry about with Cam going forward. I wouldn?t sell just yet but I would advise fantasy owners to keep track of the various reports on how Cam looks in games.

Q: Danny Amendola had a monster game against the Redskins last week. Is he a sell high or buy low? ? Linc Mastrioni from New Brunswick, New Jersey

A:?I saw plenty of this game and I?ll say this ? Danny Amendola looked very good out there but I personally think he was helped a lot by poor pass coverage underneath by Washington. I certainly don?t think he?s a sell high yet simply because his value hasn?t gotten that high but I would also urge caution at making him a buy low as often this thinking can give the impression that paying just a little more is fine. I?d look to pay no more than a WR2 for him at this point ? someone like Lance Moore is a good comp. My other observation would be that the Bengals are the next to take on the Redskins and that I wouldn?t be surprised to see young emerging PPR threat Andrew Hawkins perhaps emulate Amendola?s week 2 production.

Q: I was offered Aaron Rodgers in a 12 team league this week and all I had to give up was MJD and Tony Romo. Am I being a homer or are people panicking too much? ? Michael Williams from Madison, Wisconsin

A:?It?s not a bad price for Rodgers but to be honest I do think it?s a silly trade for the guy giving him up. Even the super studs can have bad starts and I am always amazed at how quickly fantasy owners will turn on proven providers who just a few weeks before they had revered. My advice ? don?t panic and if someone else is panicking then take full advantage.

December 18, 2011; San Diego, CA, USA; San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews (24) runs for a first down during the fourth quarter against the Baltimore Ravens at Qualcomm Stadium. The Chargers won 34-14 Mandatory Credit: Christopher Hanewinckel-US PRESSWIRE

Q: Ryan Mathews is on his way back but you still rank him low. Why? ? Kevin from Venice Beach, California

A:?The answer here is three-fold ? I think he?s still coming back from his injury, I don?t think the Chargers offensive line is at all strong and most importantly I?m not that impressed with the kid as a NFL running back. Does he have talent? Sure. Do I trust that talent to shine through every week? No ? and especially not against an Atlanta defense that has been pretty decent to start this season. Finally, I have a feeling that the Chargers will be playing from behind this week and Norv isn?t afraid to abandon the run ? which may be a decent idea to help keep his ?star? running back healthy.

Q: Michael Crabtree looks like he?s ready to be an NFL receiver. Time to call him a legit fantasy starter? ? April Kimberley Danzig from Hartford, Connecticut

A:?Crabtree is a tough one to judge because we have seen this from him before and then he?s done nothing afterward either due to ill discipline or injury. Word on him is that he?s finally fully healthy and has been getting the reps he needs to develop as a wide receiver. For now, I?ll say he?s a flex play but I would also say the upside is for him to become a genuine fantasy WR1 if he continues to show he has the trust of Alex Smith and delivers quality and consistent production.

Q:?Would you rather have a RB thats fallen off early in the season like Darren McFadden, Jamaal Charles or Chris Johnson or would you prefer an emerging RB like Kevin Smith, Doug Martin, and Trent Richardson? ? Andrew from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

A:?Since the question is fairly broad, I?ll be brief on the individual players before addressing the overall theme. With McFadden and Charles, I have no worries about their production going forward ? yet. Ask me in another three weeks. CJ2K on the other hand is a definite worry ? not only is he not producing but he is blaming his offensive line for his troubles. Yes, the Tennessee o-line has been much worse than expected but the fact that Johnson is failing to take responsibility concerns me. With that said, I still believe in him and think he?ll come back.

As for the lesser names, I have zero faith in Kevin Smith as an option as he will get hurt guaranteed and I also believe Mikel Leshoure is gonna be the man there. In the case of Doug Martin, he has certainly impressed to start the season but that Tampa Bay offense is so flat and I just don?t trust it to continue producing. Finally, Trent Richardson is a superior talent but I wouldn?t call him an emerging fantasy player yet ? he has had only one week of good production ? but I will say that I expect some big weeks with some very bad weeks scattered amongst them.

To the overall question I will say this ? we have had two weeks of games and that is such a miniscule sample size that making a general statement regarding whether to go with failing studs or emerging players is somewhat erroneous. As with the Rodgers question above, I find the whole notion of panicking about the top players to be amazing and quite frankly it?s amateurish. What makes me stop from choosing that side is that it is also true that you don?t want to be the guy who plays it safe by not taking chances on emerging talents as it is often those who take those opportunities who find themselves winning fantasy championships.

???????????????

That?s it for another week. As always you can send in your questions to [email?protected] for next week?s Fantasy Mailbag. Once again, I will be on Twitter @chrissmithsz in the final hour or two prior to Sunday?s 1pm kickoff so be sure to hit me up then with any last minute fantasy questions while also being sure to check my week 3 rankings.

Until next time, this is the Fantasy Guru signing off.
