Multi-wavelength view of radio galaxy Hercules A

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Spectacular jets powered by the gravitational energy of a supermassive black hole in the core of the elliptical galaxy Hercules A illustrate the combined imaging power of two of astronomy's cutting-edge tools, the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3, and the recently upgraded Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) radio telescope in New Mexico.

Some two billion light-years away, the yellowish elliptical galaxy in the center of the image appears quite ordinary as seen by Hubble in visible wavelengths of light. The galaxy is roughly 1,000 times more massive than our Milky Way and harbors a 2.5-billion-solar-mass central black hole that is 1,000 times more massive than the black hole in the Milky Way. But the innocuous-looking galaxy, also known as 3C 348, has long been known as the brightest radio-emitting object in the constellation Hercules. Emitting nearly a billion times more power in radio wavelengths than our Sun, the galaxy is one of the brightest extragalactic radio sources in the entire sky.

The VLA radio data reveal enormous, optically invisible jets that, at one-and-a-half million light-years long, dwarf the visible galaxy from which they emerge. The jets are very-high-energy plasma beams, subatomic particles and magnetic fields shot at nearly the speed of light from the vicinity of the black hole. The outer portions of both jets show unusual ring-like structures suggesting a history of multiple outbursts from the supermassive black hole at the center of the galaxy.

The innermost parts of the jets are not visible because of the extreme velocity of the material; relativistic effects confine all of the light to a narrow cone aligned to the jets, so the light does not reach us. Far from the galaxy, the jets become unstable and break up into rings and wisps.

The entire radio source is surrounded by a very hot, X-ray-emitting cloud of gas, not seen in this optical-radio composite.

Won?t Someone Take iTunes Out Back and Shoot It?

iTunes 11 did not arrive on time. Apple originally promised to deliver the next version of its ubiquitous music-management program in October. Last month, though, the company announced that the release would slip to November, because the company needed ?a little extra time to get it right.? This week the Wall Street Journal, citing ?people who have seen it,? reported that the real cause was ?engineering issues that required parts to be rebuilt.?

I suspect both those explanations are euphemisms for what?s really happening in Cupertino. I picture frazzled engineers growing increasingly alarmed as they discover that the iTunes codebase has been overrun by some kind of self-replicating virus that keeps adding random features and redesigns. The coders can?t figure out what?s going on?why iTunes, alone among Apple products, keeps growing more ungainly. At the head of the team is a grizzled old engineer who?s been at Apple forever. He?s surly and crude, always making vulgar jokes about iPads. But the company can?t afford to get rid of him?he?s the only one who understands how to operate the furnaces in the iTunes boiler room.

Then one morning the crew hears a strange clanging from iTunes? starboard side. Scouts report that an ancient piston?something added for compatibility with the U2 iPod and then refashioned dozens of times?has been damaged while craftsmen removed the last remnants of a feature named Ping whose purpose has been lost to history. The old engineer dons his grease-covered overalls and heads down to check it out. Many anxious minutes pass. Then the crew is shaken by a huge blast. A minute later, they hear a lone, muffled wail. They send a medic, but it?s too late. The engineer has been battered by shrapnel from the iOS app management system, which is always on the fritz. His last words haunt the team forever: She can?t take much more of this. Too. Many. Features.

Anyway, so iTunes 11 finally hit the Internet today. If you start downloading it immediately, you might be able to get it up and running by the time the ball drops over Times Square. People always wonder why this is?why a simple music player weighs in at around 90 megabytes and requires many long minutes to install and ?prepare? your library before it becomes functional. Don?t ask questions?this is just what you get with iTunes. Each new upgrade brings more suckage into your computer. It makes itself slower. It adds three or four more capabilities you?ll never need. It changes its screen layout in ways that are just subtle enough to make you throw your phone at the wall. And it adds more complexity to its ever-shifting syncing rules to ensure that the next time you connect your device, you?ll have to delete everything and resync. At this point, you shake your fists and curse this foul program to the heavens: iiiiiiiiiiiiiTuuuuuuuuuuunes!!!

Apple?s marketing material describes iTunes 11 as ?Completely redesigned. For your viewing, listening, browsing, and shopping pleasure.? That sums up the software?s problem. Way back in 2001, Apple launched iTunes as a simple desktop music player for the Mac. It was a great one, too, because while it didn?t have all of the features that more-advanced software had, it was very simple to use. When iTunes was released for Windows, in 2003, it did seem like something truly novel?a great-looking, easy-to-use program for PC users. It was, as Steve Jobs put it, "like giving a glass of ice water to somebody in Hell."

In the decade since, Apple has added arsenic to the water, drip by drip. What?s iTunes for now? As its unpithy tagline explains, it?s for everything. It?s for music and movies and TV shows and books and podcasts and university lectures and apps and, most of all, for shopping. There were legitimate reasons for Apple to have added all these features. As its devices morphed from music-playing iPods into do-everything gadgets like the iPhone and iPad, iTunes had to grow to accommodate their capabilities. Eventually iTunes became less a music player than a sync-master?the software you used to set up and manage your iGadgets. Indeed, up until just a couple years ago, the only way to get a new iPhone or iPad up and running was to plug it into iTunes first. Apple?s ?post-PC? machines still needed a PC to work?and, specifically, they needed a big, honking piece of bloated software.

The problem wasn?t that Apple added so much to iTunes. It was that it seems to have done so indiscriminately, without much thought to design or performance. The bigger iTunes got, the slower it felt, each new feature seeming to add a new weight atop its aging foundation. Now, every time I open iTunes, whether on a Mac or a Windows machine, I expect delay. The only other program I remember inducing such consistent panic was Microsoft?s Outlook 2003, which I was forced to use by office IT people before Gmail came along. In building the world?s most-downloaded Windows program, Apple has fallen victim to Microsoft-esque feature creep.

Is the new iTunes any better? Not markedly, to my eye. I?ve been using it for a few hours now. Naturally, the interface has been completely redesigned, though it?s too early for me to tell whether the new version is better or just different. Now, instead of a pane of options on the left side, you click between functions using buttons and menus on the top. Is this a genuine improvement, or just a face-lift masking the rot beneath? I suspect the latter: While some parts of iTunes move a little bit faster (the iOS app management screen, for example, used to be unusably slow; now it?s OK) most of it still feels lumbering.

What?s more, the new version doesn?t solve the key problems plaguing iTunes. First, it still does too many different things?it?s a media player, a store, and a sync manager. Second, it remains a local file manager in a connected age. The new software does have deeper integration with Apple?s iCloud service, but at its core iTunes is meant to manage ?your? music files?that is, stuff you?ve purchased or burned?on a single computer. That?s an outmoded model, one that?s being replaced by subscription systems like Spotify, which feature no distinction between stuff you own and stuff you don?t. Instead you have rights to play everything, all the time, whenever you want.

So even if the new iTunes is an improvement, it?s not a permanent solution. The only way for Apple to fix it would be to throw it out and start all over again. Perhaps?as Macworld?s Jason Snell has suggested?iTunes should be split into multiple programs: One to play your media, one to sync your devices, and one to buy or subscribe to stuff from Apple. Or maybe it could be replaced altogether with a quicker, lightweight Web-based system. Whatever Apple does, it shouldn?t aim merely to fix iTunes but instead come up with a brand new system better suited to our age. iTunes 11 is enough. Please don?t let there be an iTunes 12.

"My Little Pony" Writer Katie Cook Declares "Friendship is Magic ...

With advance orders surpassing 90,000 copies, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" #1 is poised to be one of the top selling comics of November, not to mention one of the surprise hits of 2012.

Released today by IDW Publishing, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" #1 is written by Katie Cook, a cartoonist with a long history drawing licensed properties including "Star Wars," "Lord of the Rings" and "Fraggle Rock," and illustrated by Andy Price.

Inspired by the animated TV series of the same name, the Hasbro Studios franchise has never been stronger, dating back to its introduction as a toy line in the early 1980s.

With new episodes currently running on Hasbro's cable network The Hub in the United States and Treehouse TV in Canada, "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" is midway through its third season. Thanks to a growing number of Bronies -- a term referring to predominantly older male enthusiasts -- IDW believed the audience had expanded beyond the property's traditional fanbase of pre-teen girls. And it looks like IDW presumed right.

Before discussing the series' first issue with Cook, CBR Staff Writer Jeffrey Renaud and his six-year old daughter Anika read an advance copy of "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" #1, which features the first installment of an epic four-part adventure featuring the Mane Six: Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Rarity, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie and Applejack.

Anika, a grade one student at Pierre Elliott Trudeau French Immersion Public School in St. Thomas, Ontario, had just learned about character, plot, setting and tone in school, so she was well equipped to feed her father some questions as the two connected with the series' writer.

CBR News: My daughter Anika loves Rarity and Twilight Sparkle. She wants to know which pony is your favorite and why?

Katie Cook: My personal favorite is Twilight Sparkle. Rarity is my second favorite, so your daughter has very good taste. I was a good student and right now I love to make like lists. I get freaked out when I don't meet what is on those lists, so Twilight Sparkle is very relatable to me.

She's also a big fan of Princess Celestia, who wasn't featured in the first issue. Anika wants to know if and when we might see her in the series?

You're definitely going to see her in "My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic" #4, the fourth issue of this story arc. And then, in future stories that I'm working on, you will see her a lot more. I would really love to explore Princess Luna, her sister, more too -- you would definitely see Celestia in that.

Anika was happy to see all of her favorites, but she was wondering if you were creating any new ponies for the comic book series that are different than those in the animated TV series?

I think for this series you are going to see monsters and villains that are different from the animated series. In this first four-issue story arc, I tried to establish the characters. This is really my first time writing them, so I wanted to make sure that I have their voices clear in my writing style and in my head before I expand to different ponies.

I really think that's important for me as a creator and for the "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" license for comics to have that first story feature the Mane Six. If we started right out of the gate with a new pony story, featuring new ponies, we would have lost that fanbase and that readership right off the bat.

The setting of this story is Ponyville and the Mane Six is now heading to Changeling Kingdom, but Anika is wondering if we'll soon see Canterlot, Cloudsdale and other magical places?

Actually, I created several new places for the ponies to visit. In issue #2, they are basically traveling through the wilderness, so I created a more expansive Everfree Forest, which is the very scary forest near Ponyville. I expanded past that so the ponies really get to explore what's beyond Ponyville and beyond where the ponies live. The Changeling Queen is the main villain and I explore the path to where she lives. It was really cool to create where the Changeling Queen is from and things like that.

You've mentioned that this first story is a four-issue arc. Will all the stories run through multiple issues?

We're definitely going to do some smaller stories, too. IDW has already announced that they are going to do some single-issues featuring the ponies in solo stories. Rainbow Dash will get her own issue. Twilight Sparkle will get her own issue. I will be doing one of those, as well. I can't say which one I'll have, but I will be writing one of the one-shots.

For me, I really like that four-issue story arc because it makes it feel like a two-part episode. One of the challenges of writing multi-issue stories is that every issue has to have a beginning, middle and end. It needs to have your exposition, leading up to the climax and then your resolution -- and they need to fit into each other to make everything work as a whole. That's fun and a challenge for me to make sure that everything fits.

Anika learned that an important part of storytelling is how the stories make you feel. She thought this story was pretty scary, with the changelings and Queen Chrysalis, and she wants to know if all the stories will be this scary or will some of the pony adventures be more fun and happy?

I think for this one, yes, there is a villain. But I really try to fit fun, happy moments in, too. I know it got a little bit dark, but that's because this four-issue story arc is an epic pony adventure [Anika cheers] with some darker moments. I never get darker than they do on the show, because I don't think "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" can get too dark. It takes away from what the show is. I'm not going to kill off any characters. [Laughs]

I'm not writing this as a kids' book. I'm approaching this as an all-ages property because I think that's how they handle the show. It's something kids and adults can enjoy together. That's a challenge I'm trying to push in the comic, because I don't want it to be perceived as "Strawberry Shortcake" or "Sesame Street" or something that you walk into the comic book store and say, "I have to buy something for my little girl."

I want parents to be able to read this with their kid and not roll their eyes. I want to present a story worth reading, and unfortunately that means, occasionally, you have to have an antagonist or you have to have a villain. It doesn't need to be a big, scary one like Queen Chrysalis; it can be like Trixie on the show, who is a funny, ha-ha, kind of dork.

For what I'm doing with the first story arc, which again, like I said, is an epic, pony adventure, it needs villains. It needs monsters. It needs things for the Mane Six to fight so that they can prove what amazing ponies they are.

Andy Price is drawing the interiors for the main story you're writing, but the first issue also includes a two-page co-feature written and drawn by you. Anika would like to know if you prefer writing the ponies or drawing them?

I am an artist and I've always bee the artist. It's really weird for me to just be the writer, but I can't say that I'm not having fun because I get to make scenes up for Andy to draw that I would never want to draw myself because they are too complicated. [Laughs] I really like passing the torch on to someone I have known for as long as Andy. He's a really great friend of mine, and now I get to work on a project with my friend. He's someone I don't mind calling at 3 AM because I have an idea. I don't mind waking him up, because he knows how much this project means to both of us. If I have to pass the art duties off to somebody, I don't mind passing off to Andy because he's so talented and such a great friend.

This one is from me. First, I want to thank-you for giving me a comic book that I can sit down and enjoy with my daughter. Is there added pressure when you know a legion of fathers and mothers is anxiously waiting "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" #1 because they want to enjoy it with their daughter, share a joy of reading with them and inspire their daughters to read more?

It is something I think about because I've been a comic book fan since I was a kid. I got into comics with Archie and my mom reading them with me. My mom pulled out all these old Archie comics of hers and kind of continued on the tradition. I want to be able to do that same thing with my daughter. I have a two-year old, and if there is not material out there for us, as comic book nerds, to buy and read with our kids, they're not going to grow up and become comic book fans. I'm not sure I want to live in a world, 25 years from now, when my daughter is closing in on 30 and people don't read comics because they didn't love them as kids so they aren't going to love them as adults. Plus, it's going to put me out of a job and I'm going to be really upset. [Laughs]

As with the animated television series, I love the pop culture references that you slipped in the first issue, which Anika, I am sure, missed. Why is it important to speak to the adults and parents on this meta-level?

It's fun to include my own in-jokes in every issue because I have lots of stupid, pop culture things that I love. This first issue has a "Roadhouse" reference in it. Rainbow Dash tells Fluttershy to be "nice until it's time not to be nice!" That is all Patrick Swayze. That is "Roadhouse." Kids aren't going to pick up on that, but it's a nice thing my husband chuckled over when he read it.

But every reference isn't going to be picked up on. I think there is a "Sam & Max" reference in issue #2. I grew up being a fan of Steve Purcell's "Sam & Max." It was one of the comic books that showed me that comic books didn't have to look like Spider-Man. Of course I'm going to try and do a little homage to that, but I also like to fit in some movie references too. Issue #4 is full of them.

It's a treat for the adults, but I don't try and do it blatantly. I try to make it fit with the story. It's a fun challenge, because I don't want people to think that I just go panel by panel dropping in movie/TV show/comic book quotes. But every once in a while, I slip them in.

My eight, soon-to-be-nine-year-old son was sitting in the room while we were reading this tonight. He was pretending not to be listening but I think he was. Do you think this series can be enjoyed by young boys?

Like I said, this is for all ages, and I want boys to read this. Not just the adult Bronies -- I want a nine-year-old boy to read it too. Not because he's being forced to and because his sister owns it but because he wants to and it's a fun story. The characters are fun and I think any young boy that reads it and can get past the fact that it's about "My Little Pony" is going to find that the characters are really fun and silly and, a lot of the time, very relatable. If they can stick with it, they're going to get some monsters, too. Right away. In issue #2.

?Comic books are funny books, so I'm really trying to pull in what I loved about reading comics as a kid. I'm not going to be the next big Marvel writer. I'm not going to write an epic Batman adventure. I'm trying to write funny stuff with ponies and things I think kids will like. I'm a kids' artist first and foremost.

Yes, I've done some stuff that is not child appropriate but I am striving to put a book in kids' hands that I don't mind giving to my kid.

"My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic" #1, by Katie Cook and Andy Price, is on sale now.

More specs revealed for ?dynamic? new Ford Fiesta

28/11/2012

Ford has revealed the technical specs for its stylish new Fiesta, with a number of eye-catching new design features.

The model features 17in alloy wheels, a trapezoidal front grille, and laser-cut headlamps with daytime running lamps that use LED technology.

On its interior the model boasts a high-gloss finish for the upper instrument panel that flows to the lower centre console and is replicated in the door panels, alongside satin-chrome detailing finish, along with Ford?s signature Ice Blue lighting to illuminate dials, switches and displays.

?The new Fiesta takes craftsmanship and ergonomics to the next level in the small-car segment, and will shift customer perceptions of what a small car should deliver,? said Ernst Reim, chief interior designer, Ford of Europe.

The new Fiesta comes in a choice of vibrant and dynamic colours, including new Copper Pulse, Hot Mustard and Candy Blue.

Ford?s SYNC Emergency Assistance function is offered on new Fiesta in Europe, and is able to alert local emergency services operators in 26 languages, spoken in 40 European regions ? more than any rival technology.

Praising the feature, Edmund King, AA president, said: ??We believe that Ford?s pioneering Emergency Assistance technology can help save lives.

?The AA would like to see ?e-call? as a safety feature on all new cars, as it helps notify the emergency services in that vital ?golden hour? after a serious crash when rapid medical attention can be the difference between life and death.?

Ford has also recently announced that the new Fiesta will come complete with six powertrains offering ?class-leading? fuel economy starting from 65.7mpg.

All powertrains will be available in the UK and offer sub-100g/km CO2 emissions, meaning that they are exempt from road tax and the London Congestion Charge.

New Ford Fiesta customers can also up the model?s eco-credentials by specifying an ECOnetic Technology variant, expected to deliver 87g/km CO2 emissions and return 85.6mpg.

On-the-road pricing for the new Fiesta ranges from ?9,795 to ?17,545, and the model will be available in UK showrooms from early 2013.

If you are considering a new car purchase, best car loans could be an option.

Eagles lose receiver DeSean Jackson to injury

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? The Philadelphia Eagles will place wide receiver DeSean Jackson on injured reserve after he sustained multiple rib fractures in Monday night's loss to Carolina.

Jackson leads the team with 45 catches and 700 yards receiving, but has only two touchdowns. Coach Andy Reid says the injury could take six weeks to heal.

Reid says running back LeSean McCoy remains in phase one of his concussion recovery and Michael Vick is in the fourth of five stages. Vick has missed the last two games and McCoy didn't play against the Panthers.

Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox injured his tailbone and offensive lineman King Dunlap sprained his knee. Neither will practice Wednesday.

The Eagles (3-8) have lost seven straight games. They'll visit Dallas (5-6) next Sunday night.

Athens, Ga. Researchers at the University of Georgia have discovered that a virus commonly found in dogs may serve as the foundation for the next great breakthrough in human vaccine development.

Although harmless in humans, parainfluenza virus 5, or PIV5, is thought to contribute to upper respiratory infections in dogs, and it is a common target for canine vaccines designed to prevent kennel cough. In a paper published recently in PLOS ONE, researchers describe how this virus could be used in humans to protect against diseases that have eluded vaccine efforts for decades.

"We can use this virus as a vector for all kinds of pathogens that are difficult to vaccinate against," said Biao He, the study's principal investigator and professor of infectious diseases in UGA's College of Veterinary Medicine. "We have developed a very strong H5N1 flu vaccine with this technique, but we are also working on vaccines for HIV, tuberculosis and malaria."

PIV5 does not cause disease in humans, as our immune system is able to recognize and destroy it. By placing antigens from other viruses or parasites inside PIV5, it effectively becomes a delivery vehicle that exposes the human immune system to important pathogens and allows it to create the antibodies that will protect against future infection.

This approach not only ensures full exposure to the vaccine but also is much safer because it does not require the use of attenuated, or weakened, pathogens. For example, an HIV vaccine delivered by PIV5 would contain only those parts of the HIV virus necessary to create immunity, making it impossible to contract the disease from the vaccine.

"Safety is always our number one concern," said He, who is also a Georgia Research Alliance distinguished investigator and member of the Faculty of Infectious Diseases. "PIV5 makes it much easier to vaccinate without having to use live pathogens."

Using viruses as a delivery mechanism for vaccines is not a new technique, but previous efforts have been fraught with difficulty. If humans or animals already possess a strong immunity to the virus used for delivery, the vaccine is unlikely to work, as it will be destroyed by the immune system too quickly.

"Pre-existing immunity to viruses is the main reason most of these vaccines fail," He said.

But in this latest study, He and his colleagues demonstrate that immunity to PIV5 does not limit its effectiveness as a vaccine delivery mechanism, even though many animalsincluding humans already carry antibodies against it.

In their experiments, the researchers found that a single dose inoculation using PIV5 protected mice from the influenza strain that causes seasonal flu. Another single dose experimental vaccine also protected mice from the highly pathogenic and deadly H5N1 virus commonly known as bird flu.

This recent work is a culmination of more than fifteen years of research and experimentation with the PIV5 virus, and He has confidence that it will serve as an excellent foundation for vaccines to treat diseases in both animals and humans.

"I believe we have the best H5N1 vaccine candidate in existence," He said. "But we have also opened up a big field for a host of new vaccines."

Richard's Real Estate and Urban Economics Blog: What is Apple's ...

Walter Isaacson's biography of Steve Jobs is a lot of fun--at least in part because it is not a hagiography.

One of the most striking things about the book is that Jobs never pushed profit maximization per se--he pushed "great products." ?When John Scully pushed out Jobs and ran the company, he did push profit maximization--and Apple nearly went out of business. ?Re-enter Jobs with his products-first philosophy, and Apple eventually becomes the most valuable company in history.

When economists model firms, we inevitably assume profit maximization, and then allow firms to compete either through price or quality. ?The exception to this is a principal-agent set-up, where managers are seeking to maximize their own compensation. ?But this doesn't really work for Apple, where Jobs was both a principal and an agent.

Maybe none of this matters--that making great products is a sufficiently strong proxy for profit maximization. ?But Job's desire to make great products led him to care a lot less about cost minimization than, say, Dell--the chapter on how fanatical Jobs was about the plastic case molding for the original Macintosh underscores how Jobs tended not to think about marginal revenue and marginal cost when making decisions.

Poison puzzle: Autopsy on ex-Turkey leader

Fatih Saribas / Reuters, file

Turkish President Turgut Ozal, seen here in January 1993, died of heart failure in 1993. Recent tests on his exhumed body revealed evidence of poisoning, a newspaper reported Monday.

By Reuters

ISTANBUL -- An autopsy on the exhumed body late President Turgut Ozal, who led Turkey out of military rule in the 1980s, has revealed evidence of poisoning, a Turkish newspaper reported Monday.

There had long been rumors that Ozal, who died of heart failure in 1993 at the age of 65, was murdered by militants of the "deep state" -- a shadowy nationalist strain within the Turkish establishment of the day. He had angered some with his efforts to end the Kurdish conflict and survived an assassination bid in 1988.

His body, dug up last month on the orders of prosecutors investigating suspicions of foul play in his death, contained the banned insecticide DDT and the related compound DDE at ten times the normal level, Today's Zaman cited sources from the state Forensic Medicine Institute as saying.

More news from Europe on NBCNews.com

"Ozal was most likely poisoned with four separate substances," the paper reported the sources as saying, also naming the toxic metal cadmium and the radioactive elements americium and polonium as substances found in Ozal's remains.

Forensic institute officials declined to comment.

Dominant figure in Turkish politics in 1980s
Ozal, whose economic reforms easing the grip of the state on business helped shape modern Turkey, was in poor health. After undergoing a triple heart bypass operation in the United States in 1987, he kept up a grueling schedule and remained overweight until he died.

His moves to end a Kurdish insurgency and create a Turkic union with central Asian states have been cited as motives for would-be enemies in "deep state," in which security establishment figures and criminal elements colluded.

It was Turkey's military leaders who appointed him as a minister after a period of military rule following a 1980 coup.

He went on to dominate Turkish politics as prime minister from 1983 to 1989. Parliament then elected him president, but those close to him believe his reform efforts displeased some in the security establishment.

While prime minister, Ozal survived an assassination attempt by a right-wing gunman in 1988 when he was shot at a party congress, injuring a finger.

Frequent coups
Turkish political history has been littered with military coups, alleged anti-government plots and extra-judicial killings. A court is currently trying hundreds of people suspected of links to a nationalist underground network known as "Ergenekon" accused of plotting to overthrow the government.

A media report at the start of November said Ozal's autopsy had revealed high levels of the pesticide strychnine, but the ATK subsequently denied the report.

The head of the Forensic Medicine Institute?has said it aims to complete its work in December and that its report would be handed over to prosecutors.

Could Susan Rice Survive Confirmation After All?

It was?never all that clear that Sen. John McCain had enough allies to successfully filibuster U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's potential nomination as Secretary of State, but now we're not even sure McCain has his own vote. On Fox News Sunday, McCain was asked whether Rice could say anything to change his mind about blocking her. "Sure, I give everyone the benefit of explaining their position and the actions that they took," he responded. "I?ll be glad to have the opportunity to discuss these issues with her." And on?ABC's?This Week, McCain's anti-Rice ally Sen. Lindsey Graham said,?"I blame the president above all others." He continued sounding a little less harsh than in previous interviews, saying, "When she comes over, if she does, there will be a lot of questions asked of her about this event and others."?

RELATED: John McCain Pledges to Stop Susan Rice at All Costs

The question, then, as Congress returns and President Obama's cabinet continues to take shape, is not just whether Rice will be nominated, nor whether the questions will be tough, but whether there will be enough tough questioners to actually block her from office. With the strongest critics of Rice easing up, it looks less likely they've convinced enough senators to get 60 votes to filibuster her. Why?

RELATED: John McCain Was Too Busy Complaining About Benghazi to Attend a Senate Hearing on Benghazi

Republicans want to pick their battles. GOP leaders still haven't united around blocking Rice's hypothetical nomination, The?Associated Press' Anne Flaherty?reports. "There's a definite sense within the caucus that you have to be conservative about where you put your firepower... The question is whether the caucus is prepared to filibuster her, and I'm not sure we were," a senior Republican Senate aide told Flaherty.

RELATED: The Only Thing the White House Changed in the CIA's Benghazi Talking Points

The Obama administration knows there will eventually be some kind of fight with the Senate over Benghazi.?If it's not during Rice's confirmation, then it will happen during the hearing to confirm David Petraeus's successor at the CIA,?NBC News' First Read?reports. Which helps explain why the White House isn't preparing many backups: The State nomination will go to either Rice or John Kerry, NBC reports. There's no third option.

RELATED: Graham to Romney: 'Stop Digging'; McCain Wants Clinton to Lead Israel Peace Talks

Democrats are using the fight to highlight the GOP's problems with women. "The shift in the GOP stance on Rice appears to reflect a number of developments, including the Democratic charges of racism and sexism ? which come as the Republicans assess their weak showing with women and minorities in general in the November elections,"?the?Christian Science Monitor?reports.

RELATED: U.S. Knew About Al Qaeda Link in Benghazi Within 24 Hours

Petraeus testified that Rice's talking points were like the CIA's. The shift in tone also has something to do with ex-CIA director David Petraeus's testimony about the CIA talking points on Benghazi Rice was given, the?Monitor reports. Republicans are facing increasing backlash from foreign policy analysts, as when Tom Ricks went on Fox News Monday and said the network "hyped" the Benghazi attacks because it was operating as an arm of the Republican Party.

Need Help Marketing Online? Use These Video Marketing Tips ...

Saturday, November 24th, 2012 at 9:50 am ?

You have approximately ten seconds to get the attention of a viewer. After hooking them, they will be sure to finish watching the video. What can you do to hook them? This will be dependent upon your audience, your niche and the focus of the video.

TIP! You have a small window of time to get attention from viewers. The 15 seconds that start your video must count.

Perhaps you have grown weary of traditional marketing strategies. There are other ways to market that will attract new customers. Do you know what video marketing is? If it isn?t, you should try it. This form of marketing is one of the best methods of reaching out and connecting with others. Read on to discover some great tips to make your video marketing campaign a successful one.

Watch the videos of other businesses before you make your next video. Set aside your professional views on marketing and consider your preferences from the viewpoint of a paying customer. Then take note of the reasons you feel that way about the product. Have your family and friends do the same thing. Use this information to make a successful video.

TIP! Don?t expect to post a video on YouTube and have the whole world watch it instantly. You must market it via your website, emails to loved ones, and your social media sites.

Be open to new ideas. It is important that you stand apart from the masses. If you are the same as your competitors, you will not stand out or make an impact in your industry. Set yourself apart from the rest of the pack. Ask your customers and friends for some fresh ideas.

Don?t be scared by video marketing. Creating quality videos is easy as long as you have a camera and a good tripod. You can show people how you manufacture products, demonstrate your products, or just talk to them directly.

TIP! Do not ignore the power of YouTube. Start your video marketing campaign here.

There is still work to do even after you?ve set up your transcripts and keywords. Make sure that your content is interesting to the viewer. If you?re not able to do this, you really need to rework your strategy.

Weekly podcasts are another great strategy. Podcasts are a very popular way to find new information out. Do not let this conduit pass you by. A lot of people will want to watch your podcast.

TIP! You shouldn?t insist on your videos being neat and perfect. You needn?t have the latest video equipment in order to have a successful video marketing strategy.

When you are posting marketing videos you want to choose your titles carefully. A relevant and powerful title can help draw viewers to the videos. It?s what gets people to view the video in the first place. Take some time to brainstorm titles that are creative if you want your video marketing to be successful.

Screenshot your website and include it in the video. This allows users to see the setup of your website. Screenshots also can be used when showing a how-to video. Save screenshots from your computer, and use editing software to compile them into your video.

TIP! Don?t forget optimization. As you put your videos on different sites, come up with a separate title and description for them all.

The most popular searched topics on the internet are ?how-to? items. When you make a video tutorial, the people that wish to learn about that skill will seek out videos like yours. This means you?ll always have visitors in your niche. People will be more interested in what you are offering if they think of you as an expert.

When you hear people talk about keeping things real, they also mean in your videos. The more you?re honest and sincere, the more you?ll help people that are viewing to feel comfortable with you. The less you seem like you cannot be trusted, the less people will like your video and probably won?t share it.

TIP! Create longer videos that take your viewers deeper into topics. Short videos can be aimed at a broad audience.

Impart knowledge that you have picked up over the years. You won?t be giving out your secrets, but you can share some behind the scenes stuff. Demonstrate why you are the best in your field by describing your products and how you operate. They will have the desire to learn all about your product.

If you are utilizing video marketing, greet customers in a nice way. Introduce yourself and tell people about what your business is all about. Say goodbye in a friendly way, too.

TIP! Make a video that discusses your business and product. Make free offers that will entice them and show them what they can get if they sign up.

If you have a budget to promote your videos, then choose to have your video show up on related sites. Do not allow your video to be spam. Use surveys to find out which sites your customers visit regularly.

The key to success in video marketing is to share it as widely as possible. Send it to your friends and loved ones. Start a blog on your website about the subject. Spread your link to customers you currently have, through snail mail and through electronic mail. Don?t forget to use social networking sites to get the word out. Tell people!

TIP! As you begin to make more videos, your following will increase. You should always be uploading new videos for your viewers to come back and see.

When you know more about this marketing, you can see all that you can do. You can achieve lots of great results when it comes to growing your customer based through video marketing. This is a good strategy for building your customer base and improving your business.

Keep your messages clear in your videos. Prepare yourself so you do not wander off topic. Make an outline and stick to it. If you can concentrate your efforts on the task at hand, you will find it easier to achieve the desired results.

Black Friday sales online top $1 billion for 1st time: comScore

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Black Friday retail sales online this year topped $1 billion for the first time ever as more consumers used the Internet do their holiday shopping, comScore Inc said on Sunday.

Online sales jumped at least 22 percent on Black Friday - from sales of $816 million on the same day last year, according to comScore data.

E-commerce accounts for less than 10 percent of consumer spending in the United States. However, it is growing much faster than bricks-and-mortar retail as shoppers are lured by low prices, convenience, faster shipping and wide selection.

ShopperTrak, which counts foot traffic in physical retail stores, estimated Black Friday sales of $11.2 billion, down 1.8 percent from the same day last year.

"Online has been around 9 percent of total holiday sales, but it could breach 10 percent for the first time this season," said Scot Wingo, chief executive of ChannelAdvisor, which helps merchants sell more on websites, including Amazon.com and eBay.com.

ComScore expects online retail spending to rise 17 percent to $43.4 billion through the whole holiday season. That is above the 15 percent increase last season and ahead of the retail industry's expectation for a 4.1 percent increase in overall spending this holiday.

It's not clear yet whether strong Black Friday sales online will weaken growth on Cyber Monday, which has been the biggest e-commerce day in the United States in recent years.

"Cyber Monday will be a big day, but not as much of a big day as it has been in the past," said Mia Shernoff, executive vice president for Chase Paymentech, a payment processing unit of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co.. "Faster broadband Internet connections in the office used to drive this. But now many consumers have faster connections at home and smart phones and tablets - they don't have to wait."

MOBILE SHOPPING GROWTH

A big source of online shopping growth this holiday season has come from increased use of smart phones, which let people buy online even when they are in physical stores, and by tablet computers, which have spurred more online shopping in the evenings, Wingo and others said.

Mobile devices accounted for 26 percent of visits to retail websites and 16 percent of purchases on Black Friday. That was up from 18.1 percent and 10.3 percent, respectively, on the same day last year, according to International Business Machines, which analyzes online traffic and transactions from 500 U.S. retailers.

Amazon and eBay benefit from increased use of mobile devices for shopping because they are consistently the top two online retail destinations for mobile users, ChannelAdvisor's Wingo said.

Amazon.com was the most visited retail website on Black Friday, with more than 28 million visits, followed by Wal-Mart Stores Inc's website, with 18.4 million and Best Buy Co's site, which had 9.2 million visits, according to Hitwise.

Worth noting: eBay runs one of the largest online marketplaces, rather than being a retailer, so its online traffic was not reported by Hitwise. However, eBay said the volume of mobile transactions on its marketplace jumped 153 percent on Black Friday from a year earlier.

ChannelAdvisor clients' same-store sales on Amazon.com shot up 38 percent on Black Friday, compared with a year earlier. Last year's year-over-year growth was 50 percent.

Client same-store sales on eBay's marketplace rose 31 percent on Black Friday, compared with a year earlier. Last year's year-over-year growth was 15 percent, according to ChannelAdvisor.

PRICE PRESSURE

While mobile devices may be good for sales, they may not be so good for retail profit margins. Smart phones give shoppers real-time access to product prices online, potentially exacerbating the usual holiday discounting and price wars.

Black Friday online transactions jumped almost 30 percent, but the average ticket price was down more than 11 percent, according to Chase Paymentech, which reports data from its 50 largest e-commerce merchant clients.

"It's driving prices down," Shernoff said. "Consumers are checking prices in stores and showing the retailer, and the retailer will succumb to the lowest price online so they don't lose the consumer."
