London--Rio Tinto?s Argyle pink diamonds were showcased in an exhibition at Kensington Palace here on Oct. 9 titled ?Out of the Vault: Pink Diamonds and Royalty,? which featured more than $60 million in pink diamond jewelry.

The inspiration for the exhibition came from the recent Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Rio Tinto said. The Queen had the Williamson Pink solitaire diamond set in the center of a flower spray brooch by Cartier the year of her coronation.

?We therefore consider it fitting in this Jubilee year for Argyle Pink diamonds to celebrate the special relationship that rare pink diamonds have played, and continue to play, in royal occasions,? Josephine Johnson, manager of Argyle Pink diamonds at Rio Tinto, said.

Rio Tinto said the pink diamond has been treasured by kings, emperors, princes and potentates throughout history for its nobility, rarity and beauty. The discovery of the Argyle diamond mine in 1979 in Australia opened up a regular yet small supply of pink diamonds.

?Over the past 25 years the diamond industry has come to understand and appreciate the momentous nature of the Argyle diamond mine discovery, the compelling and mysterious beauty of the Argyle pink diamond and its place in the story of jewelry,? Vivienne Becker, jewelry historian, said. ?The Argyle pink diamond has become today?s ultimate possession, an incomparable object of desire that has captured the imagination of connoisseurs and collectors around the globe.?

The Out of the Vault exhibit showcased 40 rare and valuable examples of pink diamond jewelry sourced from jewelers and designers from the United States, Australia, Japan, China, India and Europe.
