Former Reagan Sub Cabinet Official, Carlos C. Campbell, Endorses President Obama

Reagan Sub-Cabinet Official endorses President Obama for a second term and chastises former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu for injecting ethnicity into the endorsement by former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Reston, VA (PRWEB) October 31, 2012

Reagan Sub-Cabinet official Endorses President Obama for Second Term and chastises former New Hampshire Governor John Sununu for injecting Ethnicity into the Endorsement by former Secretary of State Colin Powell.

The Honorable Carlos C. Campbell, formerly Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development with the US Department of Commerce endorsed President Barack Obama for a second term. ?President Obama has led the ship of state through a tumultuous storm, in spite of resistance by a Republican Congress obsessed with the politics of obstruction. I trust President Obama to lead America going forward. This is an issue based endorsement based on my experience in the military, government and business.?

Campbell responded to Governor John Sununu?s suggesting that Secretary Colin Powell?s endorsement of President Obama was based on ethnicity. ?When a man of Governor Sununu?s brilliance injects ethnicity into the Powell endorsement, it only underscores the desperation and moral bankruptcy of the Romney Campaign. Being a Republican is not a safe harbor from bigotry and with comments from the likes of the scholarly Sununu, it underscores the convention that there is no salvation in affiliation. Secretary Powell is on solid ground in exercising his independence. To his credit, he is not and never has been a domesticated Negro. As citizens, we have a mission to accomplish. We must not become distracted by the ugly snake of racism and lose sight of the assault from the Republican Right on democracy through deception, hundreds of millions of dollars in negative advertising, efforts to obstruct voting rights, demagoguery, fear mongering, disrespecting the rights of women and the rising trend of neo-fascism in America. Now is the time to focus.?

Fifty years ago, Campbell was strapped in a Navy reconnaissance aircraft flying patrols along the periphery of the Soviet Union during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This was under????DEFCON 2 when the US and the Soviet Union was on the brink of a nuclear war. The diplomatic resolution of this crisis gave Campbell, a Naval Aviator at the time, a unique appreciation for the power of the presidency unlike anything in his lifetime.

Secretary Campbell opined: ?President Obama has exercised ?reason and judgment? that Roman historian Tacitus (56-117 AD) said were the essential qualities of a leader.?

?I respect and applaud President Obama?s leadership as the Commander-in Chief. He kept his word about ending the war in Iraq. He is keeping his word about winding down the war in Afghanistan. President Obama has led from the Oval Office. He has led from Air Force One. He has led from the podium at the United Nations. The world is a safer place because of his strong and effective leadership.?

?President Obama has my trust to continue to lead America and the world. The First Lady has my respect, and gratitude for her work with returning warriors and veterans.?

Campbell, who worked for HUD Secretary George Romney from May 1969 through October 1972, said: ?Governor Mitt Romney lacks his father?s candor, courage, and character. Tragically, Mitt Romney appears to be a front for the Neo-Cons, as if he were both a Perfidious Puppet and an Officious Oligarch.?

In 2011 Campbell was elected to the Directorship 100 (The 100 most influential corporate directors in America) by the National Association of Corporate Directors. He stated: ?The economy is in recovery. Notwithstanding the deficit and debt challenges, the recovery will increase when Congress stops their obstructive ways and the Romney team stops their deceptive and ludicrous promises. Now is the time for Americans of civility, compassion, courage and good will to keep our ?Eyes on the Prize.?

Mr. Campbell, a native of Harlem, New York, has lived in the Commonwealth of Virginia since 1965. He is a businessman, filmmaker, author and serves on public company boards.

Aphid resistance in black raspberries

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? There's good news for fans of black raspberries: A U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientist and his commercial colleague have found black raspberries that have resistance to a disease-spreading aphid.

Agricultural Research Service (ARS) horticulturist Chad Finn with the agency's Horticultural Crops Research Unit in Corvallis, Ore., and colleague Michael Dossett of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are the first to find and report black raspberry resistance to the large raspberry aphid.

ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency, and this research supports the USDA priority of promoting international food security.

The researchers screened seedlings from 132 wild black raspberry populations for aphid resistance. According to Finn, strong resistance was found in three of these populations -- one each from Ontario, Maine, and Michigan. Aphid resistance in the Ontario and Maine populations seems to be controlled by multiple genes, while resistance in the Michigan population is governed by one dominant gene.

Identifying these genes makes it easier for breeders to incorporate aphid resistance into commercial black raspberry cultivars.

Aphid control is important because fruit production is severely impacted by black raspberry necrosis virus, which is transmitted by the large raspberry aphid. This and other aphids are important virus vectors in North American black raspberries.

Although breeding for aphid resistance has been recognized as an important tool for protecting red raspberries from viral infection, this is the first report of aphid resistance in black raspberry, according to Finn.

ARM's CortexA50 chips promise 3x performance of current superphones by 2014, throw in 64bit for good measure

We knew this was coming, not least because someone let the cat out of the bag (or at least a paw) last night. Nevertheless, it's only today that we're getting the full picture of ARM's "clean sheet" v8 architecture, and you know what? It's pretty astounding. Top billing goes to the Cortex-A57, which is said to deliver "three times the performance of today's top smartphones" without guzzling any additional power. Alternatively, the chip could be designed to deliver the same performance as a current smartphone or tablet but make the battery last five times as long -- which would make that Surface RT just about five times nicer than it is already. How's all this possible? Read on for more.

Church slaying suspect shot mosque co-worker in 2001

Fulton County Police Dept. Via AP

Floyd Palmer is accused in the fatal shooting of a church volunteer.

A man accused of killing a volunteer leading a prayer service at a Georgia megachurch was charged more than a decade ago with shooting a co-worker at a mosque in Maryland, according to police documents.

Floyd Palmer was acting as security at a Baltimore mosque in June 2001 when he shot another man working with him, wounding him in the back, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday. Palmer tried to fire the gun again, but it jammed. When other people ran over to him, he turned the gun on them, but it again wouldn't fire, according to the documents.

?

The report did not say why Palmer shot the man in the back.

But Christine Singleterry, Palmer?s former mother-in-law, told?the Atlanta Journal-Constitution?that?Palmer shot the man following an argument. ?He got him to go outside and then shot him in the parking lot,? she was quoted as saying.?She told the newspaper Palmer served about 18 months in a mental facility and was released.

It's not clear when he made his way ?to Atlanta. He had been working as a maintenance facilities employee at World Changers Church International near College Park, but quit in August for "personal reasons," Fulton County Police Cpl. Kay Lester said.?

On Wednesday, authorities said Palmer, 51, calmly walked into a chapel as Greg McDowell, 39, was leading a morning prayer service for a group of about 25 people.?

Only McDowell was shot. Authorities are trying to figure out if the two men knew each other.?

Palmer casually walked out of the chapel and police arrested him several hours later when they spotted his station wagon at a mall in suburban Atlanta. Police said they have not found the gun.

A Fulton County Sheriff's Deputy stands guard outside the World Changers International church after a fatal shooting inside on Wednesday.

Police searched Palmer?s apartment in Riverdale in Clayton County on Wednesday night and Thursday morning, the Journal-Constitution reported. ?They removed several items from the apartment, but it was not immediately clear what they took out, the newspaper said.

Visibly distraught members of McDowell's family showed up at the Fulton County jail for Palmer's first court hearing Thursday, but he waived his appearance.

Palmer faces charges of homicide murder, felony murder, aggravated assault murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. His next hearing is Nov. 8.?

Ken Terry, a church pastor acting as a spokesman for McDowell's family, said the church family was distraught and trying to comfort McDowell's family.?

"He would be considered a model dad," Terry said. "To have this happen is just devastating."?

Watch US News crime videos on NBCNews.com

Renee Sunshine Lewis of the Fulton County victim assistance program called McDowell "a very loving person, extremely loving" and said "the family is just asking for prayers at this time."?

Although the campus has security officers and surveillance cameras, Lester said the suspect was known to some at the service, so his presence wouldn't have been unusual.?

The violence upset members and neighbors of the church, which is one of the largest in the United States, claiming 30,000 members at the main campus and a ministry of satellite churches across the country.?

World Changers is led by the Rev. Creflo Dollar, who was not there at the time of the shooting.?

Along with Bishop Eddie Long, Dollar is one of the most prominent African-American preachers based around Atlanta who have built successful ministries on the prosperity gospel, which teaches that God wants to bless the faithful with earthly riches.?

Dollar didn't immediately respond to media requests for comment, but he preached Wednesday evening at a Bible study in the campus's larger World Dome sanctuary. He repeated the importance of having faith in God even when bad things happen and rejecting fear and doubt.?

"We pray for this family," he said, referring to McDowell. "We pray for both families and then we pray for every family that's in here tonight."

Construction Markets - The Urethane Blog

New figures reveal that the American construction industry may be experiencing significant growth as compared to rates seen during the recession. As makers of spray foam insulation, Demilec USA is encouraged by the industry?s ability to move forward in fragile economic times.

New York, New York (PRWEB) October 25, 2012

In recent years, the construction industry has incurred negative growth as a result of the economic effects caused by the recession in the United States. However, as Americans are exiting this time of economic fragility with a sense of confidence, many analysts are reporting notable growth across multiple industries. A recent article from ForConstructionPros.com reveals that during the first half of 2012, the construction industry has grown by 5.8 percent. Although these statistics are a positive sign, many analysts agree that for the industry to reach pre-recession levels, economic growth must continue for years to come. Demilec, manufacturer of environmentally-friendly polyurethane spray foam insulation, is one business greatly affected by the success of the construction industry. The company celebrates growth and encourages innovative ideas to keep positive industry projections on track.

According to the article, Ed Sullivan, vice president and chief economist for the Portland Cement Association (PCA), recently responded to the signs of growth. Sullivan explains that since 2009, the construction industry has declined an approximate 59 percent; in order for the industry to reach pre-recession levels of economic viability, everyone within the construction industry must take a careful approach to allow for continued growth in the upcoming years. Demilec USA is one company that has chosen to follow this lead, as its eco-friendly spray foam insulation works not only to improve construction procedures for contractors, but also lower energy use costs for homeowners.

According to Demilec USA, changes in the industry?such as addressing environmental concerns?must be made for sustainable growth. Although the article explains that tax increases dictated by U.S. Congress may threaten construction industry development, other professionals, such as Sullivan, feel that there is a chance the industry can survive. The PCA predicts that although growth may prove slow in 2013, by 2014 spending may increase to 9.5 percent. This jump is directly linked to predictions that issues revolving around foreclosures and high vacancies rates will heal by that time, causing increased economic confidence.

In response to the PCA?s predications, Demilec US announces in a recent press statement, ?Demilec USA looks forward to the future of the construction industry and the return of double-digit annual growth within the next five to seven years. We will continue to innovate and provide the latest and greatest in spray polyurethane technology, such as our newest product Demilec USA APX, which will be available to Demilec USA Authorized Contractors in February 2013.?

PlayAPI: Social Gaming that Promotes Products and Brands | Small ...

Many brands work hard to gain a following on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. But once you?ve gained the fans, how do you keep them engaged and interested in your brand? PlayAPI is a startup that aims to help businesses solve that very problem through its social gaming platform.

The idea behind the service is that it will help brands create simple games for their social network, keeping them entertained while also helping them learn about new products, promotions, and other company updates.

PlayAPI does this through a number of game templates, ranging from photo games to classics like Bingo and memory. Brands can even launch quizzes, voting brackets, or challenges for fans to take part in.

So for example, a fashion retailer could create a bracket using a list of potential new products, and then let their fans and customers vote on their favorite items. This tactic allows the company to choose a new product line with items it already knows to be popular, all the while keeping fans engaged and actually interested in the brand and its products.

Brands can cater these games and challenges to upcoming promotions or market initiatives, as well as their most valuable brand traits or products and the type of engagement from social media users that would best highlight these features. The service works with data from most major social networking platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Foursquare, as well as native applications and mobile endpoints.

Social gaming as a whole has been gaining massive popularity, both through mobile apps and on social media sites like Facebook. So it only makes sense that brands would want to get in on the action, and make these games work for them. While some DIY tools for social gaming apps do exist, not many are geared specifically toward brands and promotions, especially those with compatibility on multiple platforms and pre-built templates for easier deployment.

The service is part of ALLDAYEVERYDAY, an integrated marketing communications and entertainment company based in New York.

Liz Taylor tops list of highest earning dead celebrities

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Elizabeth Taylor surpassed Michael Jackson as the highest-earning dead celebrity in the past year, with her estate pulling in $210 million, much of it from the auction of her jewels, costumes and artwork, Forbes said on Wednesday.

Jackson, who died in 2009, dropped into second place with earnings of $145 million, followed by Elvis Presley with $55 million.

In addition to the Taylor auction, which totaled $184 million, the actress, who passed away in 2011 at the age of 79, also earned $75 million from sales of her top selling perfume White Diamonds.

"The rest of the money came from property sales and residuals from Taylor's movies," according to Forbes. "After 'Cleopatra,' the star smartly negotiated a 10 percent ownership in each of her films."

Although Taylor bumped Jackson from the top spot, Forbes said the pop star is likely to regain it next year due to steady revenues from music sales and other ventures.

Cartoonist Charles Schulz, who created the Peanuts comic strip, came in at No. 4 with earnings of $37 million, followed by reggae star Bob Marley with $17 million.

Forbes compiled the ranking by analyzing the dead celebrities' earnings between October 2011-2012.

"We count money coming into the estate and we don't deduct for how the estate handles it," Forbes said.

Films stars and musicians dominated the list but Nobel-prize winning physicist Albert Einstein tied with Marilyn Monroe for seventh place, with each earning $10 million.

The 13 dead celebrities on the list earned a total of $532.5 million.

The full list can be found at http://www.forbes.com/special-report/2012/1024_dead-celebrities.html

A close friend recently died from lung cancer, which causes more deaths than any other cancer in the United States (around 29?percent).

Lung cancer is very preventable. Around 87 percent of cases in the United States are linked to smoking tobacco. Adults and children who are regularly exposed to second-hand cigarette smoke are also at an increased risk over their lifetime. Never smoking or being around cigarette smoke is the best way to keep your lung cancer risk?low.

If you currently smoke, you can reduce your risk by stopping. Although you can never get your risk as low as that of a nonsmoker, every day after you quit smoking, your risk decreases a little bit more. Information about quitting is available from your health care provider, the American Lung Association, www.lung.org or (800) LUNG-USA, and the National Cancer Institute, www.smokefree.gov or (800)?QUIT-NOW.

Lung cancer risk is also increased with exposure to asbestos, radon gas and air pollution. High consumption of cured meats (sausage or bacon for example) and alcohol (more than 2 drinks per day) are also associated with higher?risk.

Lung cancer is difficult to detect in the early stages, when it is much more treatable, because there are usually no symptoms. Symptoms that may occur include chest pain, a persistent cough, coughing up blood, fatigue, losing weight without trying, loss of appetite, shortness of breath and?wheezing.

During later stages of lung cancer, symptoms can include bone pain, eyelid drooping, facial paralysis, hoarseness or changing voice, joint pain, nail problems, shoulder pain, swallowing difficulty, swelling of the face or arms and weakness. Such symptoms can be caused by other conditions as well, so talking to your health care provider is?important.

Two main groups of lung cancers exist, non-small cell and small cell; within each group, there are many different types of cancer cells and each grows and spreads differently and responds to treatment?differently.

Recommended treatments will depend on the type of lung cancer, the stage it is in, other lung problems present, side effects from the treatment and the person?s general health. Standard treatment can include surgery, chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Other types of treatments include proton therapy, radiosurgery, gene therapy and nanoparticles to deliver chemotherapy. You can get in-depth information from cancer centers such as Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, www.seattlecca.org or (855) 557-0555, the MD Anderson Cancer Center, www.mdanderson.org (877) MDA-6789, and Dana Farber Cancer Institute, www.dana-farber.org (877)?442-3324.

You may wonder if a clinical trial is right for you or your loved one. Talk with your oncologist for more information. For additional information, the American Cancer Society has a clinical trials matching service that you can call ? (800) 303-5691 ? to get a list of clinical trials meeting your medical needs. Clinical trials are not right for everyone, and materials from the American Cancer Society may help in making treatment?decisions.

As with most cancers, early detection gives the best chance of survival. The current five-year survival rate for the earliest stage of non-small cell lung cancer is 49 percent and 31 percent for small cell lung cancer. Studies are continuing to be done to find a screening method to detect lung cancer early enough to significantly improve patient outcomes and to find more effective treatments. With both, the hope is that the survival rate will improve significantly. There is some evidence that increased intake of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and others) and exercise may decrease risk of lung cancer, but not smoking or quitting smoking is your best strategy. Do it for yourself and your loved?ones.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR

By Jim Fisher

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR ($1,299.95 direct) has long been the standard zoom lens for full-frame Nikon cameras. Only recently has it been joined by a lesser-priced counterpart, the AF-S Nikkor 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR. That lens is only $700, but has a shorter zoom range and a slower aperture on the telephoto end. If you're buying on price alone, the 24-85mm will get the job done, but the longer zoom range and fixed aperture of the 24-120mm make it a more versatile lens.

The lens itself is pretty compact, especially compared with the AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8G ED . It measures 4.1 by 3.3 inches (HD) and weighs just under 1.5 pounds. A bayonet mount hood is included, and the lens is compatible with standard 77mm filters. It can focus as close as 1.5 feet at any focal length, which is quite useful for working tight?but it's no substitute for a real macro lens like the Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar T* 2/100?.

We tested the sharpness and distortion characteristics of the lens using the Nikon D600 and the Imatest software package. It exceeds the 1,800 lines per picture height required for a sharp image at all tested focal lengths and apertures. At 24mm f/4 it records 2,680 lines, a figure that increases to 2,850 by f/8. Barrel distortion is 3.7 percent here, which is about the same as the 24-85mm. It's noticeable in images?straight lines will appear curved outwards?but can be corrected pretty easily using Photoshop.

At about the midpoint of its zoom range, 70mm, the lens notches 2,088 lines at f/4, increasing steadily to 2,978 lines at f/8. At 120mm f/4 it notches 2,300 lines and hits 2,779 lines at f/8. Distortion is of the pincushion variety at these focal lengths, which makes straight lines curve inward. It exhibits 2.9 percent at 70mm and 2.6 percent at 120mm, figures which are noticeable in field conditions, but once again can be corrected with a few clicks in Lightroom.

The Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR is one of a few Nikon FX zoom lenses that start at 24mm. Of them, it has the longest zoom ratio at 5x, but the middle price point and aperture. As such, it represents the best balance of value and performance of the bunch?its f/4 aperture only captures half the light of an f/2.8 lens, but is fine for event photography, especially when coupled with a good Speedlight. The 24-85mm is a solid choice if you're on a budget, but its $700 price tag comes with a lesser zoom range. The 24-70mm f/2.8G ED is the most expensive of the bunch at $1,900, but its fixed f/2.8 aperture comes in handy when it's not permissible or feasible to use a flash.

Workforce Reform in the Commonwealth: Strategies for Success ...

Strategies used over two gubernatorial administrations to encourage collaboration, partnership, and cooperation among the partners in education, workforce and economic development was a key topic of discussion at the National Career Pathways Network Conference in Richmond, VA.

Moderated by Paula Dehetre, Virginia Community College System, Panelists included: Huey Battle, Virginia Workforce Council, Kathy Byron, Virginia General Assembly, Elizabeth Creamer, Office of the Governor and Craig Herndon, Virginia Community College System. The strategies they outlined are below.

HB1060/SB489 Secondary school graduation requirements; diplomas

This legislation consolidated seven diplomas into three: standard, advanced studies and special diploma (for students who are disabled). Streamlining diplomas will help prepare students for post-secondary education and career readiness and will accommodate students with disabilities.

Growing State Economies

The key to economic growth is in middle skills jobs, which require more than a high school but less than a four year degree. Career pathways can closely track what industries need and identify what curriculum and learning must to be addressed to fill those jobs.

Workforce Plan/Career Pathways

Virginia?s Workforce Plan covers two primary issues ? utilizing the resources of the workforce system to expand college degrees to 100,000 and address the middle skills gap by improving and expanding pipelines in targeted business sectors. Career pathways is one vehicle for meeting these goals and therefore it is a primary workforce model in Virginia.

Role of Community College System

Strategic goals of Virginia?s Community College System are to increase credential attainment, increase employment attainment and enhance services to businesses. The Career Readiness Certificate is an assessment-based credential that gives employers and career seekers a uniform measure of key workplace skills, offered through community colleges and workforce centers. High school Career Coaches are community college employees based in local high schools to help students prepare for college and careers, including apprenticeships and workforce training. The On Ramp program targets unemployed and underemployed workers impacted by business closures, downsizing, or regional high rates of unemployment.

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

Natural process activating brain's immune cells could point way to repairing damaged brain tissue

Monday, October 22, 2012

The brain's key "breeder" cells, it turns out, do more than that. They secrete substances that boost the numbers and strength of critical brain-based immune cells believed to play a vital role in brain health. This finding adds a new dimension to our understanding of how resident stem cells and stem cell transplants may improve brain function.

Many researchers believe that these cells may be able to regenerate damaged brain tissue by integrating into circuits that have been eroded by neurodegenerative disease or destroyed by injury. But new findings by scientists at the Stanford University School of Medicine suggest that another process, which has not been fully appreciated, could be a part of the equation as well. The findings appear in a study that will be published online Oct. 21 in Nature Neuroscience.

"Transplanting neural stem cells into experimental animals' brains shows signs of being able to speed recovery from stroke and possibly neurodegenerative disease as well," said Tony Wyss-Coray, PhD, professor of neurology and neurological sciences in the medical school and senior research scientist at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. "Why this technique works is far from clear, though, because actually neural stem cells don't engraft well."

Neural stem cells can endure essentially unchanged for decades in two places in the mammalian brain, replicating just enough to meet the routine needs of those regions. In most parts of the brain, they aren't found at all.

While of critical importance to maintaining healthy brain function, true neural stem cells are rare. Far more common are their immediate progeny, which are called neural progenitor cells, or NPCs. These robust, rapidly dividing cells are poised to travel down a committed path of differentiation to yield new brain cells of several different types including neurons.

It's known that treating humans with radiation or drugs that prevent NPC replication causes memory deficits ("chemo brain") and, in children, IQ losses of up to 20 points. Conversely, studies are being initiated to see whether infusing neural stem cells into brains affected by Alzheimer's disease can enhance patients' memory function.

One category of brain cells, microglia, descends not from neural stem cells but from an immune lineage and retains several features of immune cells. "Microglia are the brain's own resident immune cells," Wyss-Coray said. Unlike most other mature brain cells, microglia can proliferate throughout adulthood, especially in response to brain injury. They can, moreover, migrate toward injury sites, secrete various "chemical signaling" substances, and gobble up bits of debris, microbial invaders or entire dead or dying neurons.

Microglia normally are distributed throughout the brain ? rather small, quiescent cells sprouting long, skinny projections that meekly but efficiently survey large areas that, taken together, cover the entire brain. But if this surveillance reveals signs of a disturbance, such as injury or infection, the microglia whirl into action. They begin proliferating and their puny bodies puff up, metamorphosing from mild-mannered Clark Kent-like reporters to buffed Supermen who fly to the scene of trouble, where they secrete substances that can throttle bad actors or call in reinforcements. Within these activated cells, internal garbage disposals called lysosomes form in large numbers and start whirring, ready to make mincemeat out of pathogens or cellular debris.

In addition to their part patrol-officer, part cleanup-crew status, microglia can also secrete substances that help neurons thrive. They also contribute to the ongoing pruning of unneeded connections between neurons that occurs throughout our lives.

But like immune cells elsewhere, said Wyss-Coray, microglia can be a force for evil if they engage in too much or inappropriate activity. They might, for instance, start to remove healthy cells (as occurs in Parkinson's) or stop cleaning up garbage strewn about the brain (for example, Alzheimer's plaque).

In a series of experiments, Wyss-Coray and his colleagues have shown that NPCs secrete substances that activate microglia. First, the researchers observed that microglia were uncharacteristically abundant and activated in the two regions in the mammalian brain where NPCs reside and new neurons are formed. Wondering whether the NPCs might be causing this increased microglial activity, the investigators incubated mouse microglia in a culture medium in which NPCs had previously been steeped. Two days later, they saw that the microglia had multiplied more, expressed different amounts of various signal molecules and featured more lysosomes. "The microglia were ready for action," said Wyss-Coray.

So they injected NPCs into an area of mice's brains where these cells are normally not found. In the same area in the opposing brain hemisphere, they injected a control solution. Again they found significant differences in microglial proliferation and activity, and more microglia in the NPC-injected side had assumed a "Superman" as opposed to a "Clark Kent" body shape. When they repeated this experiment using only the NPCs' "discarded bath water" rather than NPCs themselves, they got similar results.

Clearly NPCs were secreting something, or some things, that were spurring microglia to action.

Using sophisticated lab techniques, the team monitored purified NPCs plus several other cell types found in the brain and assessed nearly 60 different substances known to have powerful cell-to-cell signaling properties. Several such substances, it turned out, were secreted in much larger amounts by NPCs than by the other cell types: most notably, vascular endothelial growth factor, or VEGF ? a well-known molecule produced by many cell types throughout the body. VEGF stimulates the formation of blood vessels and exerts a beneficial effect on neurons. Conversely, drugs that block VEGF (such as Avastin) are frequently used to combat cancer because tumors require an immense blood supply in order to grow quickly.

VEGF is also known to boost microglial proliferation. Because it is produced in such volumes by NPCs, Wyss-Coray's team wanted to see if VEGF alone could mimic any of the changes wrought by NPCs or their culture-medium-borne detritus. So they injected VEGF into mice's right brain hemisphere, and saline solution into the left ? again with the same outcomes. Taking the opposite tack, the team injected NPC-saturated medium devoid of the cells, as they had done earlier. But this time they first used various laboratory techniques to deplete the fluid of the VEGF secreted by its former inhabitants. Doing this almost completely reversed its microglia-activating effects.

"All of this strongly suggests that VEGF produced by NPCs is playing a strong role in influencing microglial behavior," said Wyss-Coray. "This is important, because in all neurodegenerative diseases we know of we see microglia out of control." The new finding may open the door to reprogramming misbehaving microglia to play better with other cells.

Bahrain says it has identified suspects in police bomb attack

DUBAI (Reuters) - Bahrain's interior minister said on Saturday that the country had identified several suspects in a bomb attack on Thursday that killed one policeman and injured another following clashes between protesters and the security services in the U.S. ally.

The tiny Gulf Arab kingdom has been convulsed by unrest since February last year after mass demonstrations led by majority Shi'ites demanding democratic change in the Sunni-led monarchy.

Thursday's explosion, which the government called a "terrorist attack" and which followed clashes in a village south of the capital, was the latest such bombing this year. Four policemen were injured in a similar incident in May.

"We have identified a number of suspects in the case," said Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa in a statement distributed by the government's Information Affairs Authority.

Bahraini authorities have accused Shi'ite power Iran, which once ruled the Gulf island, of instigating the protests, a charge Tehran has denied, and have promised a tough response to violent demonstrations after talks with the opposition stalled.

"We won't stop at just determining who committed the crime, but we will also determine who orchestrated the explosion and who trained the individuals in their bomb-making skills," Al Khalifa said.

Shi'ites complain of discrimination in the electoral system, jobs, housing and education and say they are mistreated by government departments, the police and the army. Government promises of action to address their concerns have come to nothing, they say.

Customize Your Home With These Home Improvement Tips ...

Install radiant heat under your new tile floors. There are kits available for the do-it-yourself homeowner, and it?s really not rocket science. It will make a dramatic difference in the ?wow? factor of your home both to guests and to potential buyers. Invite them to take their shoes off and feel the heat!

Instead of trying to update bathrooms to go with current trends, it is a better idea to keep things neutral. The reason for that is the fact that styles change and there is a chance that what looks good now, may be considered dated at the time you wish to sell your home.

Before starting off on any home improvement project involving painting, make sure you have the essential tools at hand. Painter?s tape will prevent damage to doorways and windowsills, and a drop cloth will protect both your shoes and the floor. The right-sized brush will ease painting, and a roller and extension handle are vital for painting ceilings.

Before you start painting a wall, you have to prep the surface. Prepping the wall requires washing it with soap and water, which removes built-up dirt and grease that can affect how the paint sticks to your wall. A dirty wall will cause paint to chip sooner, shortening the life of your paint job.

To keep the water pipes under your home from freezing in the winter months, use foam pipe insulation to keep the cold air from seizing your pipes with ice. This pre-slit black foam slips easily onto your copper or PVC pipes, and you can secure it with duct tape.

When you buy new appliances to improve your home, don?t just set the old ones out by the curb to take up space in the land fill. Take some time to find a local recycler if they are broken. If they still work, donate them to your favorite charity or sell them for a few dollars to someone who needs them.

When working on a home improvement project, it is always important to be flexible with your time and money. If you think you can finish a project in two weeks, plan for it to take three or four weeks. Also, make sure your budget is a little larger than you expect the job to cost you.

One of the best home improvements for your house is a wood deck addition. Not only is it a wonderful place to enjoy the outdoors, it also offer a great return on your investment when you re-sell your home. Most homeowners recoup 81 percent of the money that they spent on this home improvement. Just remember to do proper maintenance each year to the deck to optimize it?s return potential.

Put a skirt on your bathroom sink! Tired of seeing those tired old pipes every time you go into your bathroom? Buy a pretty piece of fabric from the sewing center, cut it to size, and hem around all four edges. Run a cord through the top hem and gather the curtain so it hangs daintily in place.

Avoid making expensive renovations based on personal tastes. Spending $1,000 a tile on your bathroom may seem like a good plan but the odds are if you eventually sell, you will not recoup that money. If the change is not something that can be appreciated by someone other than you, consider doing something different.

For those who like to do it themselves instead of hiring someone, there are many ways to learn different techniques for home improvement. Looking on the internet, reading books or talking to more knowledgeable individuals, can help you to glean some useful information. There is much that can be learned for someone who wants to fix up a house.

While it is always nice to have a larger home with more than enough room, it is not a good idea to buy a house that has much more space than you really need. You will only end up paying a lot of money on heating costs for space you do not even use.

Try planting a tree to add some more curb appeal. This is a very simple home improvement project. Make sure to consider how big the tree will grow. If you have the space, try to plant two trees to frame your home or your entryway. Planting a tree does not take long at all either.

If you are trying to remove wallpaper as part of a home improvement project, especially if you are removing wallpaper with paint on top, consider renting a wallpaper steamer. On plaster walls, a wallpaper steamer can greatly speed up the process of wetting and scraping the wallpaper. However, you should take great care when using a wallpaper steamer on drywall, as the drywall is very easily damaged with all the scraping and steam.

Your home is one of your most valuable financial assets, and it is the place where you spend a majority of your time. So the next time you spot something that could use a little maintenance, you owe it to yourself, and to your wallet, to try your hand at fixing up your home!

The endogenous definition of money (business accounting view ...

What?s money? According to Hyman Minsky (emphasis added):

?Modern capitalist economies are intensely financial. Money in these economies is endogenously determined as activity and asset holdings are financed and commitments of prior contracts are fulfilled. In truth, every economic unit can create money ? this property is not restricted to banks. The main problem a ?money creator? faces is getting his money accepted?

Does everybody agree? No. According to a very recent ECB study about international liquidity (emphasis added):

The concept of monetary liquidity attempts to capture the ability of economic agents to settle their transactions using money, an asset the agents cannot create themselves. Money is typically seen as the asset which, first, can be transformed into consumption without incurring transaction costs, and second, has an exchange value that is not subject to uncertainty in nominal terms, rendering it the most liquid asset in the economy. Strictly speaking, these characteristics apply only to currency. The question of which other assets can be defined as money depends on the degree of substitutability between currency and these other assets. In practice, the definition of money in an economy generally includes those other assets which can be easily converted into currency: short-term bank deposits are an obvious example.

Who?s right? According to business accounting: Minsky.

Main stream economists define money as a combination of a

* unit of account (which by the way existed long before currency)
* means of payment
* store of value

Which means that the ?receivables? on the balance sheets of companies are money, too.

An example: company A buys stuff from company B and promises to pay within six weeks (which happens all the time and provides the liquidity which make markets work). According to the law, according to business accounting and, last but not least, according to the the tax man this is a legal and binding transaction ? even if the debt is not settled you will have to pay taxes and you have to add it to your turnover data. The unit of the ?receivable? (might be Euro 15,79 but that?s a unit, too) enters the balance sheet and the profit and loss account (as it?s a store of value) and was used as a means of exchange. It?s money. Temporary money, yes, but that?s money too. So, Minsky is right, according to business economics ? and the fact that transactions create payables (the debt which serves as the collateral of the receivable) means that transactions lead to money creation. Minsky is right and the ECB isn?t, which makes these ECB economists misunderstand the deeply financial nature of our economy. Money is an social act, not a good.

And this is not a measly amount of money. I?ve checked the balance sheets and profit and loss accounts of five large Dutch companies, ?receivables? alone are 90 billions of Euro?s and sometimes over 20% of total sales.

P.S. ? the idea that using money does not involve transaction costs is bonkers. Last time I checked interest on my mortgage was still 4,6%, money which I have to pay as I once needed money to use money to buy a house. And see also this recent ECB study, which estimates that making retail transactions alone cost us about 1% of GDP, not counting transport costs to and from the shops (those are market and not paying transactions costs).
