Nurses As Sexual Assault Examiners

Forensic nursing is a really exciting and relatively new nursing specialty. These professional nurses are being found more and more working with other and varied professionals in the field of criminal justice. A particular area of expertise that nurses are inching in this line of work is that of a sexual assault examiner. Nurses are highly prepared to be excellent practitioners in this line of work. Sexual assault examinations include a comprehensive assessment of the injuries sustained by victims, including emotional reactions. The examination focuses on evidence assessment and evidence collection. Many genital swabs are done other tissues collected. Blood tests are also frequently conducted to determine possible disease transmission during the sexual abuse or assault. These specialized nurses work hand in hand with the criminal justice system and also function as victim advocates. This career is highly rewarding and salaries can be very lucrative. One must first be a professional registered nurse and obtain advanced education including?forensic nursing courses to properly practice this type of specialty. Many colleges are now offering college level programs in this nursing specialty, especially at the graduate degree level.
