?Tell me about yourself,? asked Ryan Parsons, a local business owner visiting Aaron Armisto?s Computer Graphics class at the Tech Center recently. After being met
with initial silence and some muffled laughter, Parsons chose a few students to answer this most basic of interview questions. Along the way, he ?prompted them with helpful suggestions, such as ?balance your personal and professional responses.?

While talking about oneself to a stranger may be the last thing most teens want to do, it?s a skill they will need to develop if they plan to find a job someday.
Parsons, one of the brothers comprising The Brothers That Just Do Gutters, a company based in Dutchess County, ran through other common questions he often poses to job applicants, such as ?describe a time you overcame a problem at work or school? and ?what kind of compensation are you looking for??

Parsons then met separately with each student to conduct mock job interviews. He said the students, ?who have been learning about interview skills in both? Armisto?s
class and Stephanie Buckhout?s English class, fared well.

?I was really impressed with how the students handled themselves,? he said. ?I could tell they were prepared for some of the questions I had asked, and a few of them even asked me great questions. ?

The students seemed to hang on Parsons? every word. Kevin Gudiel, a junior from Brewster High School, called the presentation ?inspiring and insightful,? adding, ?I want to push myself to work harder.??

Brianna Venditti, a junior at Putnam Valley High School, thought Parson?s information was ?eye opening,? noting that she now understood the importance of being ?as prepared as possible before an interview.?

?I don?t think you can prepare enough for this process,? said Parsons.? ?I am so happy to see that BOCES is investing in its students this way. The skills being taught at BOCES are more relevant than what most colleges offer.?
