How plant communities endure stress

Jan. 30, 2013 ? The Stress Gradient Hypothesis holds that as stress increases in an ecosystem, mutually supportive interactions become more significant and negative interactions, such as competition, become less so. The idea has been hotly debated but is now backed by a review of hundreds of studies co-authored in Ecology Letters by Mark Bertness, professor of biology at Brown, who first formally proposed the hypothesis in 1994. The time has come, he said, to test its application and predictive value.

Ecology is rife with predation, competition, and other dramatic "negative interactions," but those alone do not determine the course life on Earth. Organisms sometimes benefit each other, too, and according to the Stress Gradient Hypothesis, their "positive interactions" become measurably more influential when ecosystems become threatened by conditions such as drought. Ecologists have argued about the hypothesis ever since Brown University ecologist Mark Bertness co-proposed it in 1994; Bertness says a large new global meta-analysis he co-authored in Ecology Letters definitively shows that it is true.

The evidence, principally analyzed by former Brown visiting graduate student Qiang He of Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China, comes from 206 studies of 727 shifts of plant interactions amid varying degrees, or gradients, of stress on six continents. Examining the data from each paper and contacting original authors when necessary, He determined the overall trends across the many experiments.

In the vast majority of studies, as stress increased, the significance of interactions shifted toward mutual support in that positive interactions, such as those that promoted neighbors' survival, strengthened in influence, and negative interactions, such as those that hindered neighbors' growth, weakened. In some studies, stress did not change interactions, but negative interactions never increased as stress did, no matter what kinds of plants were involved, what kinds of conditions they were under, or where they were.

Grasses, trees and shrubs have obvious differences, but in times of stress their communities exhibit less negative competitive pressure and more facilitative, positive interaction."Our results show that plant interactions generally change with increased environmental stress and always in the direction of an outright shift to facilitation (typical for survival responses) or a reduction in competition (typical from growth responses)," the authors wrote in the paper published online. "We never observed an increase in competition at higher stress. These findings were consistent across fitness measures, stress types, growth forms, life histories, origins, climatic zones, ecosystems and methodologies."

Analyses of studies of grasses, trees, and shrubs, for example, found that despite the obvious differences among these plant types, they all shifted toward less negative or more positive interactions.

"Typically, highly competitive species [e.g., grasses] have decreased competitive or neutral effects at high stress, whereas less competitive species [e.g., trees] have strong facilitative effects at high stress," the authors wrote.

Overall, the researchers found, studies with observations of greater degrees of stress increase -- "longer" stress gradients -- also observed greater degrees of shift toward positive interactions.

The hypothesis and the importance of positive interactions in ecology began to occur to Bertness in the 1970s and 1980s. As a junior faculty member at Brown, along the shores of Rhode Island, he noticed that seaweeds and barnacles would never survive the heat stress above the tides in isolation. They could only persist in groups, suggesting that with stress, organisms were better off together -- despite their competition -- than apart.

It's the same reason why sparsely planted gardens wilt in hot, dry conditions while more densely planted gardens survive. Mutually beneficial soil shading becomes more important than competition for that soil moisture when it becomes scarce.

Bertness published the Stress Gradient Hypothesis in Trends in Ecological Evolution with Ray Callaway, then a graduate student at the University of California-Santa Barbara. Callaway is now a professor at the University of Montana.

A shift in research?

Hundreds of studies over two decades from sites around the world suggest that the Stress Gradient Hypothesis can be employed as a rule of thumb. "We're no longer in the casual, earlier stages of ecology," says biologist Mark Bertness.Nearly two decades later with so much evidence now assembled, Bertness said, ecologists should feel confident enough in the Stress Gradient Hypothesis to employ it as a "rule of thumb." Rather than continuing to debate whether the hypothesis is valid, he said, researchers could now focus on crafting experiments to probe how much predictive value the hypothesis has and test its applications to conservation biology.

The hypothesis suggests, for example, that marine ecosystem managers who want to help tropical fish should focus on sustaining foundational species in the ecosystem, such as corals. With the ecosystem's foundation shored up the natural tendency among species toward greater positive interactions under stress should allow the fish to weather stress better.

"We're no longer in the casual, earlier stages of ecology," Bertness said. "In our lifetimes we're watching Caribbean coral reefs die, kelp forests die, and salt marshes and sea grass beds being decimated. We need to figure this stuff out quickly. These are no longer intellectual arguments without consequence."

In other words, with nature under stress, Bertness hopes that He's efforts to pull together the available data will lead ecologists to pull together so that they can apply the guidance the hypothesis provides.

In addition to He and Bertness, the paper's other author is Brown postdoctoral scholar Andrew Altieri. He's visiting scholarship at Brown was funded by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Visiting Scholar Fellowship.

Get Airport Transfer Vehicles That Are Not Difficult To Acquire

Unless you have a dedicated valet to anticipate your every move beforehand whenever you're boarding or alternately stepping out of a flightyou'll by more often than not left frustrated by default airport transfer vehicles that are not only difficult to acquire but simultaneously bleed you out of your finite finances if you aren't careful enough. Needless to say, you can rely on family or your friend to get you out of this particularly tight spot when it's time to head over to the bustling airport, at the very least. But matters can immediately get out of hand once you've stepped foot to your intended destination and running short on acquaintances who would gladly pick you up at a moment's noticeworst of all, this scenario might even ruin your travel plans way before you get a chance to arrive at the airport on timethereby causing you to miss your important flight.

Needless to say, there are all kinds of companies and businesses that are aware of these airport transportation issues and through the years have finely tuned their services and collective expertise to ensure that their clients are able to board their flight on time with virtually a non-existent rate of traffic related accidents as well as keeping their prices relatively affordable.

Nowadays, it isn't uncommon to secure your boarding tickets by obtaining them through secure online transactions. This reliable technological development has provided immense benefits to massive airline companies operating at an international scale as well as their valued clients from all corners of the globe. While search engines (notably Google) tirelessly trawl through a near limitless number of web pages in order to efficiently index airlines based on your concurrent area and overarching preferencesairport transportation companies have taken note and largely followed suitwhich is undoubtedly a welcome development for hectic consumers aiming to hit two birds with one stone by agreeing on a airport transfer appointment with locally available companies in addition to conveniently purchasing their plane tickets online.

If you're still unsure of whether arranging for an airport transportation pickup via the web isn't such a swell idearemember that there's certainly no shortage of incentives and discounts exclusively available to web based transactions that you normally won't be able to acquire via conventional channels. Of course, all the typically features of brokering deals conventionally still apply and are fundamentally unchanged when carried over to a virtual settingthe type of vehicle that can transport you from point A to B still depends on your preferences; you're even permitted to integrate optional amenities to your airport transfer in Sydney that aren't unlike what you'll find on a highly functional but nevertheless luxurious limousine. Finally, you can even go so far as arrange for welcoming transportation once you reach your destination by familiarizing yourself with prospective airport transfer companies of said destination as well.

The Yellin Center Blog: Study Shows Online Education Has Promise

Online education, particularly when it?s free, is exploding in popularity around the planet. A recent article in the New York Times explores the success of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). Traditionalists may be surprised that one of the primary findings reported in the article is that MOOCs can be more efficient and effective than traditional classes led by a teacher. Surprised? Duolingo, a popular Web-based language instruction site, commissioned a study to determine how effectively their product teaches languages such as Spanish, German, French, Portuguese, Italian, and English to non-native speakers. The results showed that the average learner with no knowledge of Spanish would need to devote 135 hours to cover a semester?s worth of entry-level Spanish curriculum, whereas the same content could be learned on Duolingo in only 34 hours! The study was small and its results can?t realistically be generalized beyond its preliminary findings. Still, the indication seems to be that, done right, MOOCs can be effective indeed. And the best part? MOOCs are free.

One problem with MOOCs, however, is that students are unlikely to finish courses in which they enroll. Perhaps it?s easier to drop a free service than one that charges tuition, or maybe students are less motivated by a computerized instructor than they would be by face-to-face interactions with classmates and a professor. Whatever the reason, the New York Times piece reports that fewer than ten percent of MOOC students complete their coursework. Still, the article reasons, if 5,000 people out of the 100,000 who initially signed up walk away with a new knowledge base, it?s hard to say that the MOOC was unsuccessful. We agree.

(AP) ? A genetic variant commonly found in Chinese people may help explain why some got seriously ill with swine flu, a discovery scientists say could help pinpoint why flu viruses hit some populations particularly hard and change how they are treated.

Less than one percent of Caucasians are thought to have the gene alteration, which has previously been linked to severe influenza. Yet about 25 percent of Chinese people have the gene variant, which is also common in Japanese and Korean people.

British and Chinese researchers analyzed 83 patients admitted to a Beijing hospital during the 2009-2010 swine flu pandemic. Of those with serious complications like pneumonia, respiratory or kidney failure, 69 percent had the genetic alteration. Among patients with mild illness, only 25 percent did.

"It doesn't mean you should panic if you have this gene variant," said Andrew McMichael, director of the Weatherall Institute of Molecular Medicine at Oxford University, one of the study's authors. "Most people who have it won't run into any trouble at all."

He suggested people with this genetic predisposition to severe flu should be treated earlier and more aggressively than others.

McMichael estimated that people with the genetic variant were five to six times more likely to get severely ill once they're infected. The gene alteration doesn't make people more likely to catch the flu, since that depends on other factors like environmental exposure and previous immunity.

McMichael said the gene variant might give people the same susceptibility to get severely ill from other ailments including dengue, SARS and other flus. But it could also provide them with better immunity if they recover.

The research was published online Tuesday in the journal Nature Communications.

Some experts said it was an intriguing finding that shows a patient's response to a virus may determine how sick they will become.

"The bug in someone who gets severely ill is not any different than the one that infects someone who has mild illness," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, who did not participate in the study. "It's the host that does all the damage to themselves."

If people carried the genetic variant, Osterholm said, their immune systems were more likely to kick into overdrive if they caught the flu, causing problems like organ damage or blocking their airways.

Scientists have long recognized that diseases don't strike all populations equally. Caucasian people are more likely to get the crippling Guillain-Barre syndrome after vaccinations and flu epidemics are often more fatal in indigenous populations in Australia and Canada. Records are too limited to know if previous flu outbreaks have been more lethal in Asia.

Osterholm warned that the genetic variant wasn't limited to people of Chinese descent. "A lot of other populations have the same genes that respond immunologically like this," he said.

Osterholm thought that different flu strains would likely trigger different responses in people and just because Chinese people may have been more vulnerable to severe disease with swine flu doesn't mean they would have the same reaction with other flus.

Others said genetic screening might one day be included in national flu plans.

"Further work needs to be done to justify that, but maybe in the future we would be able to say that if you're of a certain ethnicity, you are more at risk and should be prioritized for vaccination or antivirals," said Peter Openshaw, director of the Centre for Respiratory Infection at Imperial College London. "It's possible we could one day do a genetic test before treating someone with flu to see what the best treatment would be."

(AP) ? There was no alarm, no working fire extinguisher, no sprinkler and almost no escape from the nightclub that became a death trap for more than 200 Brazilian college students.

As investigators began poking through the rubble and families mourned their dead, the university city in southern Brazil tried to understand how the Sunday morning blaze that killed 231 people could have been sparked in the first place, then rage rapidly out of control.

Why was there only one door available for exit and entry? What was the flammable material in the ceiling that allowed the conflagration to move so quickly? And, more pointedly, why was a band playing at the club allowed to use pyrotechnics inside the building?

Police were leaning toward the pyrotechnics as the cause of the blaze during a party at the Kiss nightclub organized by several academic departments at the Federal University of Santa Maria. Inspector Antonio Firmino, part of the team investigating the fire, said it appeared the club's ceiling was covered with an insulating foam made from a combustible material that ignited with the pyrotechnics.

Firmino said the number and state of the exits is under investigation but that it appeared that a second door was "inadequate," as it was small and protected by bars that wouldn't open.

The disaster, the worst fire of its kind in more than a decade, also raises questions of whether Brazilian authorities are up to the task of ensuring safety in such venues as it prepares to host next year's World Cup and the 2016 Olympics.

Some critics have said conditions in many Brazilian bars and clubs are ripe for another deadly blaze. They say that in addition to modernizing sometimes outdated safety codes and ensuring sufficient inspectors, people must change their way of thinking and respect safety regulations.

Hundreds of people marched peacefully outside the nightclub Monday night to remember the victims, and demand justice. Some carried signs with slogans such as, "May God's justice be carried out."

"We hope that the justice system, through its competent mechanisms, succeeds in clarifying to the public what happened, and gives the people an explanation," said marcher Eglon Do Canto.

Brazilian police said they detained three people Monday in connection with the blaze, while the newspaper O Globo said on its website that a fourth person had surrendered to police. Police Inspector Ranolfo Vieira Junior said the detentions were part of the ongoing police probe and those detained can be held for up to five days.

Vieira declined to identify those detained, but local media has identified them as two co-owners of the club and two members of the band that was using a spark machine inside the building when the fire erupted.

According to state safety codes here, clubs should have one fire extinguisher every 1,500 square feet as well as multiple emergency exits. Limits on the number of people admitted are to be strictly respected. None of that appears to have happened at the Santa Maria nightclub.

"A problem in Brazil is that there is no control of how many people are admitted in a building," said Joao Daniel Nunes, a civil engineer in nearby Porto Alegre. "They never are clearly stated, and nobody controls how many people enter these night clubs."

Rodrigo Martins, a guitarist for the group Gurizada Fandangueira, told Globo TV network in an interview Monday that the flames broke out minutes after the employment of a pyrotechnic machine that fans out colored sparks, at around 2:30 a.m. local time.

"I felt that something was falling from the roof and I looked up and I saw the fire was spreading, and I shouted 'Look, it's catching on fire, man, it's catching fire,'" Martins said. "Then the drummer tried to throw water on it, and it looked like the fire spread more then. Then the security guards came with an extinguisher, tried to use it, but it didn't work."

He added that the club was packed an estimated 1,200-1,300 people.

"I thought I was going to die there. There was nothing I could do, with the fire spreading and people screaming in front."

Standing next to the stage when the fire broke out, Rodrigo Rizzi, a first-year nursing student, watched the tragedy unfold.

"I was right there, so even though I was far from the door, at least I realized something was wrong," he said. "Others, who couldn't see the stage, never had a chance. They never saw it coming."

As he headed toward the door, the air turned dense and dark with smoke; there was no light, nothing pointing to the single exit. Rizzi found himself clawing through a panicked crowd that surged blindly toward the door.

"I was halfway across the floor, I could see the door, but the air turned black with this thick smoke," he said. "I couldn't breathe. People started to panic and run toward the door. They were falling, screaming, pulling at each other."

Witnesses said security guards who didn't know about the blaze initially blocked people from leaving without paying their bills. Brazilian bars routinely make patrons pay their entire tab at the end of the night before they're allowed to leave.

Inside the club, metal barriers meant to organize the lines of people entering and leaving became traps, corralling desperate patrons within yards of the exit. Bodies piled up against the grates, smothered and broken by the crushing mob.

About 50 of the victims were found in the club's two bathrooms, where the blinding smoke caused them to believe the doors were exits.

Martins confirmed that the group's accordion player Danilo Jacques, 28, died, while the five other band members made it out safely. Martins said he thought Jacques made it out of the building and later returned to save his accordion.

The first funeral services were held Monday for the victims, including brothers Pedro and Mercello Salle. Most of the dead were college students 18 to 21 years old, but they also included some minors. Almost all died from smoke inhalation rather than burns.

National Health Minister Alexandre Padilha cautioned that the death toll could worsen dramatically, telling news media in Santa Maria on Monday that 75 of those injured were in critical condition and could die.

Santa Maria Mayor Cezar Schirmer declared a 30-day mourning period, and Tarso Genro, the governor of the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, said officials were investigating the cause of the disaster.

The blaze was the deadliest in Brazil since at least 1961, when a fire that swept through a circus killed 503 people in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro.

Sunday's fire also appeared to be the worst at a nightclub anywhere in the world since December 2000, when a welding accident reportedly set off a fire at a club in Luoyang, China, killing 309 people.

Canada's wine and spirits market to continue rapid growth ...

2_100519020815_1_gallery_full

Note: A Vinexpo study forecasts that growth in Canadian wine and spirits consumption will continue to grow up to 2016 and will be three times greater than that of the rest of the world. What follows are the results of the study.

TORONTO ? The unveiling of Vinexpo?s 11th study on the Current trends in the international wine and spirits market and outlook to 2016, conducted by British firm, The International Wine and Spirit Research (IWSR) on behalf of Vinexpo was held in Montr?al and Toronto, with the participation of the prestigious fair?s spokespersons, Robert Beynat, general manager and Xavier de Eizaguirre, chairman.

A veritable benchmark for sector professionals, this much-anticipated study confirms that Canada will maintain its impressive growth rate with regard to wine consumption between 2012 and 2016 (+14.27 per cent), three times greater than the global average.

image001Between 2012 and 2016, Canada will become the world?s fifth biggest wine consumer, behind China, the United States, Russia and Germany.

Vinexpo, the international wine and spirits fair, will open its doors in five months, running from June 16 to 20, 2013. Held every two years, the fair highlights the achievements made by sector professionals. More than 650 Canadian operators will join the event?s 48,000 expected visitors.

Accelerated growth within the international wine market

Still and sparkling wines posted a +2.8 per cent increase between 2007 and 2011, for a sales total of 2.679 billion 9-litre cases, representing 32 billion bottles. The Vinexpo study forecasts that said consumption growth rate will increase between 2012 and 2016 and re-establish the pace it set in the early 2000s at +5.3 per cent over five years. The study further estimates that international consumption in 2016 will reach 2.873 billion 9-litre cases, representing 34.48 billion bottles.

?This growth is easy to explain,? comments Robert Beynat, general manager of Vinexpo. ?China, the United States and Russia are core markets that drive international growth. In 2010, China became the world?s fifth biggest wine consumer, while the United States took the lead.?

These three markets and Australia alone saw their consumption jump by 1.55 billion bottles between 2007 and 2011.

2009-22-05-1_1_gallery_full

However, the situation is reversed across Europe, where wine consumption is undergoing a downturn. For the first time in 15 years, the United Kingdom and Germany posted a respective drop of -4.07 per cent and -2.73 per cent between 2007 and 2011. France and Italy were similarly affected during this period, with respective drops of -7.13 per cent and -2.51 per cent, while Spain underwent a significant free-fall of 19.67 per cent over the past five years. The United States, France and Italy were the period?s top three consumers.

On the export side, the French have reaffirmed their international leadership position with an export sales figure of US $9.9 billion (+5.24 per cent since 2007).

Italy, Spain and Australia are hot on their heels, posting significant sales volume increases. Sadly, said boosts are not proportional to their sales figure increase, reflecting a notable average price drop among export wines.

Evolving consumption habits

The Vinexpo study underscores several major changes in consumption habits, namely the rapid growth of sparkling wines, with an 8.52 per cent increase between 2012 and 2016, as well as the steady rise of ros? wines, which will rise 7.58 per cent by 2016.

PRESSE DIM 3_gallery_full

Red wines are still dominating the international market, as they represented 54.7 per cent of still wine consumption in 2011 and will post a 9.1 per cent increase by 2016.

It also bears mentioning that consumers are looking for quality. Bottles sold at over $10 per unit totalled 213.566 million 9-litre cases in 2011 and said volume will undergo significant growth (+29.93 per cent) between 2011 and 2016.

Canadian consumers are no different, with 69.5 per cent of wines bought in Canada valued at over $10. Furthermore, the Vinexpo study believes this consumption rate will increase by 30.45 per cent by 2016.

Fast-growing Canadian market

Between 2007 and 2011, wine consumption in Canada increased by +14.55 per cent, for a total of 43.21 million cases consumed in 2011. By 2016, this rate should stay the course, reaching 50.70 million cases, representing 14.27 per cent increase between 2012 and 2016, three times greater than the average international growth.

Consumption trends are stable, with a 17.49 per cent increase in red wine consumption between 2012 and 2016, representing 61.7 per cent of Canada?s still wine consumption, while ros?s continue their rapid ascension, with a 45.41 per cent boost between 2012 and 2016.

barsac_gallery_full

As for value, sales figure growth keeps pace with volumes, with wine sales in Canada expected to increase by +14.75 per cent, for a total of $5.7 billion in 2016.

Import wine consumption is going strong, totalling 31.27 million cases in 2011 and expected to post 37.59 million cases by 2016, representing a 17 per cent increase. However, the domestic wine consumption rate is likely to drop slightly (from +10.71 per cent to +7.72 per cent) by 2016.

Coming as a major change since 2011, France has lost its status as Canada?s foremost supplier to Italy, whose exports to Canada posted a +16.1 per cent increase, while France saw its Canada-bound exports drop by -3.74 per cent.

Spirits market stabilization

According to the Vinexpo study, world spirits consumption should stabilize, posting a +8.98 per cent growth rate increase by 2016, well below its +32.64 per cent growth between 2007 and 2011.

The Asia-Pacific region is the world?s foremost spirits consumption zone (61.5 per cent of global consumption). This region posted a tremendous growth rate of +74.31 per cent from 2007 to 2011, which should stabilize to +13.63 per cent between 2012 and 2016.

In Canada, spirits consumption should grow +3.70 per cent between 2012 and 2016. This accelerated growth stems from an increase in import spirits consumption (+4.16 per cent) in 2012 and a drop in domestic spirits.

Vodka, the most popular spirit in Canada (4.76 million cases in 2011), is expected to grow +9.83 per cent between 2012 and 2016. It is followed by rum, which saw its consumption rate increase by +6.55 per cent between 2007 and 2011.

Ahead of the Bell: Yahoo to update turnaround bid

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Yahoo's fourth-quarter earnings report will provide an update of new CEO Marissa Mayer's efforts to revive the Internet company's revenue growth.

The results, due out after the stock market closes Monday, cover Mayer's first full quarter as Yahoo's leader. She left Google Inc. to join Yahoo in mid-July, shortly after the third quarter had already begun.

Although Yahoo still hasn't proven it can generate sustained revenue growth for the first time since 2008, investors have already been betting Mayer is on her way to pulling it off.

Yahoo's stock price has been trading above $20 for much of this month, hitting its highest levels since September 2008. The shares closed last week at $20.37. That translates into a gain of about 30 percent since Mayer joined the company.

Much of the confidence in Mayer, 37, may stem from the respect she won while helping to build Google into the Internet's most profitable company during her 13-year tenure there.

Since coming to Yahoo, Mayer has been trying to improve employee morale and intensify the company's focus on mobile and social networking services ? two of technology's hot spots in recent years.

Despite its early enthusiasm for Mayer, Wall Street isn't expecting a lot from Yahoo Inc. Analysts surveyed by FactSet foresee a slight rise in earnings from the previous year, to 27 cents per share, excluding an $83 million charge that Yahoo plans to take to account for the recent closure of its South Korean operations. Investors are likely to pay more attention to Yahoo's revenue, minus ad commissions, which analysts predict will be unchanged from the previous year at $1.21 billion.

The stalled revenue has stemmed from Yahoo's inability to attract more advertising, even though a bigger slice of the marketing budget is being diverted to the Internet. Google's fourth-quarter report released last week showed the Internet search leader's ad revenue, minus commissions, had climbed 17 percent from the previous year.

$32 To Add Internet To Your Dumb TV Is Your Deal of the Day

You've probably got a TV languishing unused somewhere in your home. Or you've got a beautiful modern dumb TV and no easy way to stream Netflix on it. Either way, it's hard to find a less expensive way to add internet to your TV than this D-Link MovieNite Plus streaming box. Sure, it doesn't have the plethora of streaming options as the Roku 2 XS or the simplicity of the Apple TV, but at $50 less than the heavy hitters, it doesn't have to. It will serve Netflix, Pandora, and YouTube in 1080p with aplomb. More »

Angela Davis Celebrates Sixty-Ninth Birthday: 11 Memorable Quotes From An American Icon

On this day, 69 years ago, the activist, scholar, and revolutionary Angela Davis was born in Birmingham, Alabama.

Davis has spent much of her life fighting for and defending forgotten or marginalized groups in America and abroad. Known for her political activism during the turbulent 1960's, she became a household name when on August 18, 1970 J. Edgar Hoover made her the third woman ever placed on the FBI's 10 Most Wanted List.

After a nationwide manhunt, Davis was arrested on October 13, 1970 for her alleged connection to the kidnappings and murders that occurred during Jonathan Jackson's attempt to free the imprisoned Soledad Brothers. Davis had purchased the guns used by Jackson. Upon her arrest, then President Richard M. Nixon congratulated the FBI for capturing Davis, describing her as a "dangerous terrorist."

Her subsequent trial was covered widely across the world. Stars such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono (with their song Angela) and The Rolling Stones (with their song Sweet Black Angel) showed their support for Davis. On June 4, 1972, after 13 hours of deliberation, an all-white jury acquitted Davis of murder, kidnapping and conspiracy charges. Davis was 28-years-old at the time.

From her radical work during the 1960's, through her trial and subsequent acquittal, to her work as an educator (Davis has served as a professor and department head at the University of California at Santa Cruz and as visiting scholar at other colleges and universities) Davis' name holds a secure space among the ranks of legendary Americans.

As she celebrates her 69th birthday, let's take a look back at some of her most memorable quotes.

  • "Art on the Frontline," Women, Culture, and Politics (written 1984).

"The work of the political activist inevitably involves a certain tension between the requirement that position be taken on current issues as they arise and the desire that one's contributions will somehow survive the ravages of time."

"Because it would be too agonizing to cope with the possibility that anyone, including our? selves, could become a prisoner, we tend to think of the prison as disconnected from our own lives. This is even true for some of us, women as well as men, who have already experienced imprisonment."

Cows fed flaxseed produce more nutritious dairy products

Jan. 25, 2013 ? Dairy cows that are fed flaxseed produce more nutritious milk, according to a new study by Oregon State University.

Their milk contained more omega-3 fatty acids and less saturated fat, the study found. Diets high in saturated fat can increase cholesterol and cause heart disease, while those rich in omega-3 and other polyunsaturated fatty acids may reduce the risk of heart disease, studies have shown.

Traditional cattle feed mixtures of corn, grains, alfalfa hay and grass silage result in dairy products with low concentrations of omega-3 and other polyunsaturated fats, according to Gerd Bobe, the lead scientist on the study, which has been published online in the Journal of Dairy Science.

Ten pregnant cows at OSU's dairy were fed different amounts of flaxseed -- up to seven percent of their daily diet. Researchers attempted to pinpoint the amount of flaxseed that would maximize the amount of omega-3 in milk and dairy products without negatively affecting their production and texture.

"We were looking for a sweet spot," said Bobe, an expert in human and animal nutrition. "Too much of a good thing can be bad, especially when trying to maintain consistency with dairy products."

Collaborators in OSU's food science and technology department assisted in turning milk into butter and fresh cheese, which were then tested for texture and nutritional composition.

The study found that feeding cows up to six pounds of extruded flaxseed improved the fat profile without negatively affecting the production and texture of the milk and other dairy products. Extrusion presses raw ground flaxseed into pellets with heat.

At six pounds per day, saturated fatty acids in whole milk fat dropped 18 percent, poly-unsaturated fatty acids increased 82 percent, and omega-3 levels rose 70 percent compared to feeding no flaxseed. Similar improvements were observed in butter and cheese.

Still, saturated fat accounted for more than half of the fatty acids in the dairy products while the increase in polyunsaturated fats compromised no more than nearly nine percent of the total.

Researchers also noted that the refrigerated butter was softer and less adhesive thanks to fewer saturated fatty acids. Also, the cows produced the same amount of milk while eating flaxseed.

Although flaxseed costs more than traditional cattle feeds, Bobe hopes that it still could be an affordable feed supplement for cows because products enriched with omega-3 can sell for a premium at the grocery store.

"Many consumers already show a willingness to pay extra for value-added foods, like omega-3 enriched milk," he said.

One thing is for sure, he said: Dairy farmers will have no trouble convincing cows to eat flaxseed.

"They loved it. They ate it like candy," he said.

Lincoln Steven Spielberg film review | Stuff.co.nz

lincoln

Southern charms: Sally Field and Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln.

LINCOLN (M) 153 mins ???

Up against 12 Oscar nominations, mine may be a lonely cry in the wilderness. Because frankly I found Lincoln interminably boring. Well, it does eventually end after two-and-a-half hours of talk and swirling John Williams' music - but aside from the occasional scene where superb acting distracts you from writing a mental shopping list, it's disappointingly dull.

Without doubt, Daniel Day-Lewis will, and should, win Best Actor for his portrayal of slave-trade-liberator Abraham Lincoln. His performance is simply astounding, effortlessly conveying the great president's unrelenting commitment to the noble cause, the avuncular influence with a warm twinkle in his eye. Despite not having seen footage of the real Lincoln, Day-Lewis has us believe he is the man.

Granted, there are other strong performances, though we've seen Tommy Lee Jones' fist-thumping southernness before. Sally Field has been lauded as Lincoln's erratic and ultimately (sym) pathetic wife, but she comes across shrill and old, and not at all a match for the great man (neither actor nor president).

The main problem is the film lacks tension (save the ultimate scene of vote-counting), suffering perhaps from being a story to which we know the ending. Spoiler alert: Slavery was abolished!, although 2006s comparatively lighter, yet more moving, Amazing Grace, proved much more engaging with the same outcome.

Otherwise Lincoln is just scene after scene of almost exclusively male famous faces spouting complicated and oft-witty lines. It is a veritable Live Aid of a cast, sporting James Spader, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Hal Holbrook - not quite everybody who's anybody, but a lot who used to be somebody.

Perhaps Lincoln resonates with American audiences because slavery is a scar on their past which continues to itch. Whatever, director Steven Spielberg has made many a true story interesting and exciting. But here we are given no identification character to care about, so it's hard to feel what's really at stake.

Those swayed by the Academy's enthusiasm will, and should, make up their own minds. But I'm afraid this is one super-hero story that couldn't make me care.

Bishop confirms National Catholic Reporter is not a - Catholic Culture

CWN - January 25, 2013

Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Missouri, has confirmed that the National Catholic Reporter should not advertise itself as a ?Catholic? publication.

In a column appearing in his diocesan newspaper, Bishop Finn notes that he, as the bishop of the diocese in which the Reporter is located, has the duty to ?call the media to fidelity.? He cites the Code of Canon Law, which (in #1369) calls for ?a just penalty? for anyone who ?excites hatred of or contempt for religion or the Church.?

The National Catholic Reporter, Bishop Finn remarks, has taken an editorial stance that puts the publication at odds with the Church, by ?officially condemning Church teaching on the ordination of women, insistent undermining of Church teaching on artificial contraception and sexual morality in general, lionizing dissident theologies while rejecting established Magisterial teaching, and a litany of other issues.? He reveals that he has received numerous complaints about the Reporter?s editorial policies.

Bishop Finn reminds his readers that in 1968 his predecessor, Bishop Charles Helmsing, directed the editors of the Reporter to remove the word ?Catholic? from the title of their publication. The newspaper?s editors refused. Bishop Finn says: ?From my perspective, NCR?s positions against authentic Church teaching and leadership have not changed trajectory in the intervening decades.?

The bishop discloses that soon after arriving in Kansas City, he sought to engage the Reporter editors in a discussion of their fidelity to the Catholic Church, but was rebuffed. ?At other times, correspondence has seemed to reach a dead end,? he adds.

Bishop Finn concludes that ?I have a responsibility as the local bishop to instruct the Faithful about the problematic nature of this media source which bears the name 'Catholic.'? He says that he remains willing to discuss the issue with the Reporter staff, but as things stand, ?I find that my ability to influence the National Catholic Reporter toward fidelity to the Church seems limited to the supernatural level.?

Marleau leads Sharks past Avalanche 4-0

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) ? Patrick Marleau became the second player in NHL history to open a season with four straight multigoal games, striking twice on the power play in the first period in the San Jose Sharks' 4-0 victory against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.

Marleau has scored exactly two goals in each game this season, joining Ottawa's Cy Denneny in 1917-18 as the only players to open a campaign with four multigoal games, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Both of Marleau's goals came after Ryan O'Byrne took two additional minor penalties for retaliating after San Jose's Brad Stuart flattened Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog with a vicious hit.

Joe Thornton added a power-play goal in the second period, giving San Jose 10 power-play goals in four games and a franchise record 19 overall.

Thomas Greiss made 24 saves for his first career shutout and Matt Irwin got his first career goal as the Sharks are off to their best start since also winning the first four games in 2008-09.

The Avalanche lost their seventh straight game in San Jose since winning Game 1 of their first-round playoff series in 2010. After killing off 16 straight penalties coming into this game, Colorado allowed goals on San Jose's first three power plays and another just 11 seconds after killing the Sharks' fourth man advantage.

San Jose's power play is in midseason form in this lockout-shortened season, with 10 goals in 24 chances. Marleau has four of those goals as he is off to a scintillating start. He is the first Sharks player ever with four straight multigoal games and has outscored the Sharks' opponents, who have seven goals in four games.

He has Thornton to thank as the Sharks captain has nine assists and two goals already this season. The third member of San Jose's top line, Joe Pavelski, has eight assists so far.

The Sharks took more than 12 minutes to get their first shot on goal in the game but managed to take a 2-0 lead after the first period because of stellar special teams play and a big hit by Stuart that changed the complexion of the game.

San Jose's troubled penalty-kill unit was up to the task early, allowing no shots on two power plays for Colorado. Then San Jose's dangerous power-play took over late in the period after Stuart's big hit.

O'Byrne took offense and challenged Stuart to a fight. The Sharks came out of the scrum with two power plays after O'Byrne got hit with an instigator penalty and one for fighting with a facemask. Landeskog left the game briefly before returning for the second period.

Marleau and the Sharks made Colorado pay. Just 28 seconds into the first power play, Marleau whacked at a rebound and knocked it past Semyon Varlamov to give San Jose the lead.

He delivered again on the second power play after a nifty passing display from Dan Boyle to Joe Thornton to Marleau, who tapped the puck in by the side of the net for his fourth straight two-goal game.

NOTES: Marleau is the first NHL player with fourth consecutive multigoal games since Alexander Mogilny had five straight in 1992-93 for Buffalo. ... Recently signed Scott Gomez made his Sharks debut on the fourth line in place of James Sheppard and also got time on the second power-play unit. ... O'Byrne got 19 minutes of penalties for his scuffle with Stuart as both players were sent off for fighting and O'Byrne got an additional 10-minute misconduct.

Business Owner Preps Students for Interviews - Southeast-Brewster ...

Editor's Note: Thanks to the Patch user who submitted this piece.?Click here?for detailed instructions on posting announcements on Patch.

?Tell me about yourself,? asked Ryan Parsons, a local business owner visiting Aaron Armisto?s Computer Graphics class at the Tech Center recently. After being met
with initial silence and some muffled laughter, Parsons chose a few students to answer this most basic of interview questions. Along the way, he ?prompted them with helpful suggestions, such as ?balance your personal and professional responses.?

While talking about oneself to a stranger may be the last thing most teens want to do, it?s a skill they will need to develop if they plan to find a job someday.
Parsons, one of the brothers comprising The Brothers That Just Do Gutters, a company based in Dutchess County, ran through other common questions he often poses to job applicants, such as ?describe a time you overcame a problem at work or school? and ?what kind of compensation are you looking for??

Parsons then met separately with each student to conduct mock job interviews. He said the students, ?who have been learning about interview skills in both? Armisto?s
class and Stephanie Buckhout?s English class, fared well.

?I was really impressed with how the students handled themselves,? he said. ?I could tell they were prepared for some of the questions I had asked, and a few of them even asked me great questions. ?

The students seemed to hang on Parsons? every word. Kevin Gudiel, a junior from Brewster High School, called the presentation ?inspiring and insightful,? adding, ?I want to push myself to work harder.??

Brianna Venditti, a junior at Putnam Valley High School, thought Parson?s information was ?eye opening,? noting that she now understood the importance of being ?as prepared as possible before an interview.?

?I don?t think you can prepare enough for this process,? said Parsons.? ?I am so happy to see that BOCES is investing in its students this way. The skills being taught at BOCES are more relevant than what most colleges offer.?

Miveu intros updated X case that turns your iPhone 5 into a rugged POV camera, we go straps-on

We've seen rugged cases for iPhones before, even those that claim to give it action-cam credentials. Miveu rolled up to CES and revealed its latest offering that incorporates a wide-angle FOV lens (much like the Mophie) along with a chest mount strap, updated to fit the latest phone from Apple (they launched one to fit point-and-shoots, too). The idea is pretty simple, of course. Snap your iPhone / camera into the snug protective case, fix it to the chest-strap and then get your action on. Miveu is also keen to point out that its solution means you can capture that sports footage, without having to bring another device along. Of course, you're then relying on the video capabilities of the phone itself, which might not be comparable to dedicated solutions, but it's definitely convenient, and at $80 (or $60 for the point and shoot version), a whole bunch cheaper.

Obviously, without too many moving parts, our impressions are based largely on the quality and feel. The case itself seems plenty tough, and we'd have no reservations about putting our own phone in it while out on the slopes / track. The strap part seemed well built, and the guys at the booth had to wear them all throughout the show, so if nothing else, that's testament to how comfortable they are. The lens component, however, is likely the main attraction, as this is what turns it from a regular phone case, into an action cam facsimile. The wider angle certainly makes the footage look more like what you might be accustomed to from a GoPro or similar, and serves the dual purpose of protecting the one on your phone at the same time. The mount also has a tilt-and-pivot mechanism meaning you can flip the camera through 360 degrees, or angle it more directly towards the action. If you fancy getting your phone in on the action, you should be able to do so starting April 1st.

(AP) ? An Egyptian prosecutor placed a new detention order on Hosni Mubarak on Saturday after the ousted ex-president was questioned over valuable gifts he allegedly received from the country's top newspaper as a show of loyalty while he was in power, a security official said.

The public funds prosecutor ordered Mubarak to be held for 15 days pending investigation, the official said. The former president is already serving a life sentence after being convicted for failing to stop killings of protesters during the 2011 uprising that overthrew him. But he is scheduled to hear a ruling on his appeal on Sunday, and the detention order could prevent him from walking free pending retrial were the appellate court to rule in his favor.

He was moved to a Cairo military hospital last month after slipping inside a prison bathroom and injuring himself.

The security official says Mubarak was questioned over watches, pens, bags, belts and jewelry he reportedly received from the official Al Ahram newspaper.

The official did not say if any charges were pending over the alleged gifts. He spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to speak to media.

The list of gifts is long and includes 36 named recipients, including Mubarak's wife Suzanne, his two sons, and his top associates including former information minister Safwat el-Sherif and former prime minister Ahmed Nazif, according to the daily el-Shorouk.

The website for Al Ahram carried an official report estimating the value of the gifts at some six million Egyptian pounds, approximately $1 million. The newspaper said that "Al Ahram Gifts" was a ritual when the newspaper was run by Mubarak-era loyalists. Its management was changed following the uprising.

Lawyers for the Mubarak family, for Nazif and for Sherif could not immediately be reached for comment.

Many former members of Mubarak's regime have been charged with corruption or the killing of protesters during the uprising. Some are serving jail terms, others are detained pending trials, and others have been released after charges were dropped.

Prosecutors have so far been unable to convict Mubarak or his immediate family on corruption charges, although the two sons are still standing trial.
