Lawyers for Gitmo prisoners decry 'alarming' conditions

Lawyers for terror suspects held at the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo, Cuba, said Tuesday that detainees are engaged in widespread protests of conditions at the prison, including a hunger strike that may imperil their lives.

Calling the situation ?alarming,? the lawyers said in a statement that some of their clients are ?coughing up blood? and ?losing consciousness.?? A letter making similar assertions was sent earlier this week to Navy Rear Adm. John W. Smith, the commander of the Joint Task Force at Guantanamo and signed by a dozen lawyers who represent most of the detainees at Guantanamo.??

A spokesman for U.S. military at Guantanamo?? disputed the lawyers? claims of a widespread hunger strike, saying they and their clients were merely trying to get attention and keep Guantanamo ?in the news. ??

The spokesman, Navy Capt. Robert Durand, said that a half-dozen detainees are currently on a hunger strike -- five of whom are being force fed through tubes -- and that no lives were in danger. Durand added that the figure was consistent with the average number of hunger strikers at Guantanamo over the past several years. He also acknowledged that ?some detainees? have been disciplined and moved out of Camp 6 -- the most permissive of the camps at Guantanamo, with communal living arrangements -- but he declined to say how many or give the reasons for the action.?

The conflicting claims underscored the difficulty of obtaining information about conditions at the facility, which President Barack Obama vowed to shut down on his first day in office after his 2008 election but which still remains open as a result of congressional opposition to its closure. There are 166 detainees remaining at the camp, but military rules forbid them from communicating in any way with members of the news media and visits to the camp by outsiders are tightly regulated. Even their communications with their lawyers must be cleared by military censors.

One of those lawyers, David Remes, told NBC News in a telephone interview from Guantanamo that he saw one of his clients -- Hussain Almerfedi, a Yemeni -- and that he had lost ?substantial weight? and was ?very sick.? Under Guantanamo rules, Remes said he could not share anything that his client told him until the censor cleared the communication. But he said that he offered Almerfedi some trail mix during their meeting and he declined to take it -- a sign,? Remes said,? that his client was participating in the hunger strike.

?The men are at their wit?s end,? he said. ?This is their eleventh?year of being there and they have no prospect for release.? He also said that since taking over last year as commander,? Adm. Smith had ?turned the clock back? to 2002 and 2003, imposing harsher restrictions on the detainees and more-rigorous searches in which personal items were being seized. The searches are being carried out by guards -- some of whom are returning soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq -- who he asserted appear to be extracting vengeance for what they encountered overseas, he said.???

One flashpoint appears to have been a Feb. 6 search at Camp 6 in which, according to the lawyers, camp authorities seized blankets, sheets, towels, sleeping mats, razors and other items from the detainees,? including family photos and religious CDs from the detainees. In their letter to Smith, the lawyers alleged that Arabic interpreters at the camp inspected Qurans ?in ways that constitute desecration.??

Durand, the Guantanamo spokesman, disputed that any harsher restrictions had been imposed by the new commander and said the search last month was in keeping with past practice. He said that search, and earlier ones, have turned up? ?a Wal-Mart worth of stuff,? including improvised weapons, illegal electronics and other illicit contraband. But he said that handling of the Qurans was tightly regulated? and that no guards are even permitted to touch the Islamic Holy Books during the searches.

Durand also acknowledged that some of the dispute between camp authorities and the detainees? lawyers may be about defining terms. Guantanamo officials define a hunger strike as refusing to eat nine meals in a row. But, he said, some of the detainees may be hoarding food in their cells even when they claim to be on a hunger strike.??

Why retailers are pinning hopes on Pinterest

NEW YORK -- After a tough day at work as a publicist in Minneapolis, Becca Bijoch would often indulge in a little retail therapy. She usually headed out to the stores as she did not care much for online shopping.

That changed last year when the 26-year-old joined Pinterest, a photo-sharing website that allows users to "pin" images to online bulletin boards based on their interests and to follow others. Bijoch says she has found all sorts of things that she bought after seeing them on Pinterest, from great kitchen tools on CrateandBarrel.com to clothes at Asos.com.

"I'm probably spending more now. I'm on the couch at night, after having two glasses of wine," Bijoch says, but she has no regrets. "I tell everyone that Pinterest has changed my life."

Pinterest, which was the fastest standalone website to hit 10 million unique visitors a month, now has 25 million members, of whom many - like Bijoch - are young, female, well-educated and have disposable income.

Retailers are hankering after these users, but it is sometimes difficult to nab them because Pinterest is an ad-free website and "pins" flourish virally. While many retailers have learned how to interact with consumers on Facebook and Twitter, they are still struggling to figure out Pinterest and the ways to make money out of reaching shoppers through it.

In that effort, many retailers have installed Pinterest buttons on their main websites, created their own Pinterest pages, and allocated marketing dollars to acquire followers. While Pinterest says it does not track metrics internally, many ancillary businesses have popped up to help companies harness the revenue-driving possibilities of the site.

"It's a huge window-shopping platform," says Kyla Brennan, chief executive of HelloInsights, a Santa Monica, California company that provides analyses of Pinterest use. "It helps people find what they really like. Does it encourage people to be a little impulsive? Of course."

E-commerce experts say Pinterest generates more dollars per users than some other social media sites, even though Facebook, the world's largest social network with more than a billion users, is a leading driver of shopping by volume.

Pinterest shoppers, on average, spend nearly $170 per session, according to a study by RichRelevance, an e-commerce consultant, which tracked 700 million shopping sessions. In comparison, Facebook shoppers spend $95 per session, while Twitter shoppers spend $70.

Major retail brands with a presence on Pinterest include L.L. Bean, with more than 5 million followers; Nordstrom Inc., with more than 4 million followers; and Lululemon Athletica Inc. with close to 2 million. Other major players like Gap Inc. and Urban Outfitters Inc. have fewer followers on the site, but are growing.

The three-year-old Pinterest recently closed a $200 million round of financing, which raises its value to $2.5 billion.

Pinning costs
Most companies' Pinterest activity is handled by their social media teams, but the efforts differ from promotions on Facebook and Twitter because Pinterest boards are interest-based and not timeline-based. Nordstrom's Facebook page, for example, features a couple of products daily that are on sale or seasonally interesting, but its Pinterest page is an evergreen collage of fashion lifestyle images.

As there is no direct advertising and Pinterest is still growing, the marketing cost to businesses of acquiring new users is lower than other sites, says Daniel Maloney, CEO of PinLeague, a consultancy that tracks social media usage.

"The current cost of acquiring a Pinterest follower is a penny to 50 cents, depending on type of business. That compares to 50 cents to $2.50 on Facebook," he said.

One of the top ways to reach followers seems to be to do anything but try to sell products. L.L. Bean's most popular board, for instance, is devoted to pictures of woodland creatures - its most popular pin is a picture of a cat dressed up to look like a bat.

"While we do measure traffic coming to llbean.com and llbeansignature.com from Pinterest, we are not currently promoting the platform as a selling channel," says Laurie Brooks, senior public relations representative for the company based in Freeport, Maine. Internal metrics show Pinterest users spend more than others, and that traffic is on the increase even if, overall, it is less than what comes from Facebook, she adds.

L.L. Bean, like many other retailers, has not offered discounts through Pinterest, but it has sponsored contests. So has Nordstrom, which did a bridal-focused sweepstakes in January.

"Our followers share and save compelling imagery and merchandise - period. Our boards aren't focused on bargains or coupons," says Bryan Galipeau, who is group manager of social media at Nordstrom's Seattle headquarters. "We think it's important to take a broader view of Pinterest because that's also how our customers see it."

Fashion retailer Gilt.com's "Pin to Win" contest offered a $2,500 shopping spree to women who shared certain images from their wedding dress collection. Gilt also rewarded those who received 50 re-pins of a children's dress the chance to buy the item for 77 percent off.

Similarly, fashion-seller Karmaloop.com offered a trip to Paris for the best outfit pinned to one of its boards.

Other goodies from retailers include AMC Theatres' giveaway pinboard where users can win movies posters and other memorabilia. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. ran a contest about inspiring people to be environmentally conscious.

Even if you could win something by shopping through Pinterest, consumers need to exert some impulse control.

Since most of what is "pinned" on the site is aspirational, people can end up spending way more than when they click through from other social media sites.

Mexico's ruling party opens door to tax, energy changes

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party on Saturday paved the way for possible tax hikes and an overhaul of state oil giant Pemex as it seeks to spur growth in Latin America's second-biggest economy.

PRI delegates from across Mexico voted to change the party's platform during a congress in Mexico City, lifting a ban on imposing value-added tax (VAT) on food and medicines and giving it scope to open up Pemex to more private capital.

President Enrique Pena Nieto wanted the changes so he has more room to maneuver on boosting Mexico's low tax take and revamping its flagging oil industry.

PRI Congressman Javier Trevino said the changes would allow Mexico to modernize its tax system and energy sector, and give it a chance to devote more resources to helping the poor.

"This is a good signal," he said.

The centrist PRI lacks a majority in Congress, and is likely to face months of tough negotiation before it can lay out detailed plans on tax and energy reform. Those measures are expected to be presented in the second half of this year.

No party has had a majority in Congress since 1997, hindering efforts to enact major change on tax and energy law.

But Pena Nieto surprised many critics when he unveiled a broad pact with the main opposition parties to work together on economic reform shortly after he took office in December.

PRI financial experts are looking at ways of raising the Mexican tax take - currently the lowest in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development as a proportion of gross domestic product - by up to six points of GDP.

Applying VAT to food and medicine is controversial because the burden would fall most heavily on the poor, about half the country's population. PRI lawmakers say a large chunk of any additional revenue generated must go towards helping the poor.

One option under discussion is applying a reduced rate of VAT on food and medicines. But even if the full rate of 16 percent were levied, it would only boost the tax take by around 1 percentage point of GDP.

OIL SHAKE-UP

In its revised platform, the PRI agreed the state would remain in control of Mexico's energy resources. However, it added a section saying it would "design mechanisms to generate greater private-sector participation in energy production."

"But this isn't giving oil to foreigners," said Eduardo Bernal, a PRI delegate at the congress.

Cutting fiscal loopholes, getting the millions of workers in the underground economy - nearly a third of the labor force - to pay taxes and improving states' tax-raising ability are among the measures the government is weighing to increase revenues.

The PRI, which ruled Mexico 1929-2000 before regaining power last year, blocked efforts by the conservative National Action Party (PAN) to raise more VAT during the past 12 years.

Since recapturing the presidency, the PRI leadership has made the case for sweeping change to bolster the economy, which underperformed its main regional peers under the PAN, growing about 2 percent annually for most of the past decade.

The changes sought by Pena Nieto run contrary to many old tenets of the PRI, a party which started on the left and drifted toward the right during its long rule.

Overhauling Pemex, a symbol of Mexican self-reliance that provides a third of the federal tax take, is particularly sensitive for the PRI, which created the company when President Lazaro Cardenas nationalized the oil industry in 1938.

Output of crude has slumped to less than 2.6 million barrels per day from 3.4 million in 2004, and lawmakers worry the oil industry will be left behind unless it can improve performance.

"We plan an energy reform that mulls an opening in areas where we don't have the capacity to do it, so Pemex can make alliances with private capital," said Marco Bernal of the PRI, head of the energy committee in the lower house of Congress.

Pena Nieto aims to make the monopoly more efficient and more independent. He has taken inspiration from Brazil's state-controlled oil firm Petrobras, part of which has been publicly listed, and said in January the two might pursue joint projects.

But he is having to defend his administration from accusations that he plans to privatize the oil industry.

Expectant parents die in NY crash; infant survives

NEW YORK (AP) ? A pregnant young woman who was feeling ill was headed to the hospital with her husband early Sunday when the car they were riding in was hit, killing them both, but their baby boy was born prematurely and survived, authorities and a relative said.

The driver of a BMW slammed into the car carrying Nachman and Raizy Glauber, both 21, at an intersection in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, said Isaac Abraham, a neighbor of Raizy Glauber's parents who lives two blocks from the scene of the crash.

Raizy Glauber was thrown from the car and her body landed under a parked tractor-trailer, said witnesses who came to the scene after the crash. Nachman Glauber was pinned in the car, and emergency workers had to cut off the roof to get him out, witnesses said.

Both of the Glaubers were pronounced dead at hospitals, police said, and both died of blunt-force trauma, the medical examiner said.

Their infant son was in serious condition, said Abraham. The hospital did not return calls about the child. The Glaubers' driver was in stable condition, police said. Both the driver of the BMW and a passenger fled and were being sought, police said.

On Saturday, Raizy Glauber "was not feeling well, so they decided to go" to the hospital, said Sara Glauber, Nachman Glauber's cousin. Abraham said the Glaubers called a car service because they didn't own a car, which is common for New Yorkers.

The Glaubers were married about a year ago and had begun a life together in Williamsburg, where Raizy Glauber grew up in a prominent Orthodox Jewish rabbinical family, Sara Glauber said.

Raised north of New York City in Monsey, N.Y., and part of a family that founded a line of clothing for Orthodox Jews, Nachman Glauber was studying at a rabbinical college nearby, said his cousin.

Brooklyn is home to the largest community of ultra-orthodox Jews outside Israel, more than 250,000. The community has strict rules governing clothing, social customs and interaction with the outside world. Men wear dark clothing that includes a long coat and a fedora-type hat and often have long beards and ear locks.

Jewish law calls for burial of the dead as soon as possible, and hours after their deaths, the Glaubers were mourned at a funeral Sunday afternoon. Dozens gathered shoulder to shoulder on the street outside, men in hats and women in shawls or head coverings, nearly everyone in black. The sound of wailing filled the street as the two black-draped coffins were carried from a vehicle.

After the funeral began, a speaker sobbed uncontrollably, his voice choked with grief and echoing over loudspeakers set up outside.

Just before, Sara Glauber spoke admiringly of her cousin.

"You don't meet anyone better than him," she said. "He was always doing favors for everyone."

She said Nachman's mother herself just delivered a baby two weeks ago.

"I've never seen a mother-son relationship like this," said Sara Glauber. "He called her every day to make sure everything was OK. He was the sweetest, most charming human being, always with a smile on his face."

She added that, of him and his bride, "if one had to go, the other had to go too because they really were one soul."
