Yemen air strike kills 10 'Qaeda' members

An air strike in central Yemen on Sunday killed 10 suspected Al-Qaeda extremists and three women companions, but a militant leader escaped unharmed, a tribal chief said.

The raid that targeted two vehicles in the Radaa area "killed five of the guards of Abdulraouf al-Dahab and three women," said the tribal chief, adding that a rocket missed the car of Dahab, who is a local Al-Qaeda leader.

He later said that the toll of dead militants had increased to 10, adding that the vehicle that was hit was a pick-up.

The source said that the plane, which could have been an unmanned drone, fired two rockets. The first missed Dahab's car but the second hit the vehicle behind it, which transported the guards and women.

The attack took place around 4:00 pm (1300 GMT) on the road between the village of Hama and Dahab's village of Manasseh, he said.

Other local and security sources confirmed the attack and the toll.

The United States is the only country that has drones in the region and in recent months has been carrying out strikes on Al-Qaeda targets in the south and east of the country and in the Arabian peninsula.

Dahab is the brother of Tarek al-Dahab, who led Al-Qaeda fighters in a January raid in which they overran the town of Radaa, 130 kilometres (80 miles) southeast of Sanaa.

The militants abandoned the city later the same month, bowing to tribal pressure.

Tarek Dahab was killed in February.

Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula has taken advantage of the weakness of the central government during a year of protests against ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh to expand their presence in the impoverished country.

Al-Qaeda loyalists have carried out a spate of deadly attacks against Yemeni security forces and their militia allies since Saleh's successor President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi came to power, pledging to crush the militants.

In an all-out offensive launched in May, the army retook a string of towns in Abyan province in the south.

A day in the life of Preachmans wife: Alzheimer's Memory Walk 2012

For the past 5 years my family has been participating in the Alzheimer's Memory Walk. My Grand Pappy has been dealing with Alzheimer's for 12 years so this is a disease close to my heart.

Our team has been Team Gray Wolf since we first started walking. Gray Wolf was my Grand Pappy's handle when he was boating so we are called that in honor of him.

This year Team Gray Wolf raised $1458!!!! That is amazing since our team was small!

When we left our house for the walk it was raining. I was disappointed but we have been praying for rain so we can't complain when it comes! It didn't really matter, though. The walk goes on rain or shine.

Here is our family getting ready to walk for my Grand Pappy!

Brenson was very confused about why we were outside in the rain.

This was the first year that the girls were team members. We have brought them along in the past, but they weren't team members so they didn't raise anything.

This is our whole team. I still am shocked we were able to raise so much with so few members! It just goes to show what can happen even with a small group!

But, alas, the walk was not meant to be. We didn't even get to the starting line when it was called. It started thundering and lightening pretty bad. That's okay, though, because the walk isn't what helps fund research. Our donations do that and we were able to turn them in before going home!

I look forward to doing this again next year!

Baseball roundup: Rangers win; Astros lose

CLEVELAND ? Adrian Beltre?s four hits for Texas was only one fewer than the entire Cleveland Indians team.

Beltre also scored twice as the Rangers rolled to their 10th win in 13 games and handed the reeling Indians their sixth straight loss.

Ryan Dempster (4-1) pitched two-hit ball over six innings, Michael Young had two of Texas? four RBI hits with two outs, and Joe Nathan got the final two outs for his 26th consecutive save and 28th overall.

?The guys executed in the clutch,? Texas manager Ron Washington said. ?Beltre was very good, and Dempster had a good changeup and slider, enabling him to move his fastball around.?

Not everything went the Rangers? way. Right fielder Nelson Cruz was ejected for slamming his bat on the plate in the seventh after his third strikeout. After the game, lefty Robbie Ross, who is 6-0 with a 1.78 ERA in 52 relief appearances, was put on the disabled list with a strained forearm.

Beltre had three of his hits off Ubaldo Jimenez (9-14) as Cleveland?s right-hander couldn?t keep the Indians from losing for the 15th time in 16 games. Cleveland went 5-24 in August, tying the team record for losses in one month, set in July 1914. The Indians are 5-28 since July 27.

Beltre had two doubles and two singles. His only out came on a diving catch by left fielder Jason Donald in the ninth. The third baseman has hit .472 (17 for 36) with 14 RBIs in his last nine games. In his last 68 games, Beltre has batted .334 with 15 homers and 45 RBIs.

The Indians are as frigid as Beltre has been torrid, dropping to 11-36 in the second half. Cleveland has hit just .194 with runners in scoring position over that time and their starting rotation?s 6.47 ERA during that span is the worst in the majors.

?For the most part, pitching sets the tone,? manager Manny Acta said before the game. ?You can scratch out runs here and there, but it is all about pitching.?

As Acta?s job falls further into jeopardy with each loss, he shook up the lineup to try and manufacture some offense. He reinstated Shin-Soo Choo into the leadoff spot, dropping Jason Kipnis and Asdrubal Cabrera one spot each to second and third.

?You?ve got to die trying, man,? Acta said.

The Indians did just that against Dempster, who was perfect before issuing a one-out walk to Jack Hannahan in the third. Santana broke up the no-hitter with an RBI single in the fourth, when shortstop Elvis Andrus made two errors.

?He?s been around,? Acta said of Dempster. ?He knows how to pitch. He uses both side of the plate. He?s a veteran guy. He did a good job.?

Dempster wasn?t worried about facing Cleveland?s left-laden lineup. Donald, at No. 9, was the only right-hander.

?Going left, right, left, right can be tougher,? Dempster said. ?When you have a lot of lefties, you can get into a groove with location. I can get more comfortable with my split.?

Jimenez made 31 pitches in the first, but allowed only one run, on Beltre?s RBI single.

Two innings later, his pitch count at 78, Jimenez trailed 3-0 after Young and David Murphy had consecutive RBI singles in the third.

Ian Kinsler?s two-out RBI single on Jimenez?s season-high 117th pitch made it 4-1 in the sixth.

The right-hander gave up eight hits, four runs and three walks. Though he struck out seven, he also dropped to 1-7 with 7.79 ERA in 10 starts since the All-Star break.

Young singled home Beltre in the seventh against reliever Esmil Rogers.

Dempster, who was only 5-5 despite a sparkling 2.25 ERA in 16 starts for the Cubs, is enjoying great run support in Texas. The Rangers lead the majors with 675 runs, and have scored 31 in Dempster?s 37 1-3 innings since he was acquired on July 31 from the Chicago Cubs. He had not faced Cleveland since 2006, when he worked in relief for the Cubs.

Santana doubled and scored on Casey Kotchman?s 12th homer, off Koji Uehara in the ninth.

NOTES: Cleveland?s 5-24 August ties the 1982 New York Mets and 1961 Washington Senators for the worst record in the month since 1944. ... Texas went 19-10 in August and is 23-6 against the Indians since the start of 2009. ... Andrus went 1 for 5. He has hit safely in all 27 of his career games against Cleveland. ... Texas C Mike Napoli, out since Aug. 11 with a strained left quad, has begun running, but it?s unclear when he will return. ... OF Shelley Duncan was sent outright to Triple-A Columbus. The Indians had designated him for assignment on Wednesday. ... Cruz went 0 for 4 with runners in scoring position overall before his first career ejection, by plate umpire Bill Welke. ... Texas will call up six players when the rosters expand Saturday, including 19-year-old SS Jurickson Profar. He will be the first player born in 1993 to play in the majors when he debuts. ... Cleveland RHP Jeanmar Gomez will start Saturday in place of RHP Roberto Hernandez, who has a tender right ankle.

Astros 9, Reds 3

HOUSTON ? Houston left-hander Fernando Abad was not about to chalk up Friday night's rough outing to inexperience.

?I know how to control those situations,? a composed Abad said in Spanish after the Astros? 9-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. ?Simply put, when you miss a pitch, if they miss, you're good, but if they get to it, you pay the price.?

On this night, he missed a few.

Abad's latest outing lasted just 4 1-3 innings after the Reds roughed him up for six runs on nine hits, including two home runs.

?We tried to get him stretched out, but you know it's about executing pitches,? Astros interim manager Tony DeFrancesco said of Abad. ?I think that's our biggest problem, our command of the fastball, our breaking ball command. We're making mistakes, and right now we're not good enough to make mistakes.?

Zack Cozart gave Cincinnati an early lead with a two-run homer in the second, and Jay Bruce hit a three-run drive in the fifth for the Reds, who stretched their win streak to four.

The Astros got back-to-back home runs by Fernando Martinez and Matt Dominguez in the third inning to tie the game at 2, but the effort fell well short of helping the team avoid its sixth consecutive defeat.

Brandon Phillips went 3 for 5 with a double and an RBI, and right-hander Mike Leake struck out six over six strong innings for Cincinnati, which leads the majors in wins with 81 and at 34-14 boast the best record since the All-Star break.

?I missed on some breaking balls,? said Abad, who picked up his second loss in as many outings.

Abad (0-2), who is making the transition after 81 major league appearances as a reliever, was making his first start since Aug. 25, when he went four innings in a 3-1 loss at the New York Mets.

Abad unraveled in the fourth. He allowed Cozart's double off the left-field wall to start the inning.

Bruce cleared the bases with his 28th home run of the season to make it 6-2.

?That fifth inning, I think I made some good pitches, but they had some luck on their side, and with Bruce, I did make a mistake,? said Abad, who has started in the Dominican winter league. ?That pitch sunk toward the middle of the plate, and he took advantage of it.?

Abad singled in the second inning for his first major league hit.

Martinez crushed a curveball from Leake to the right-field upper deck to begin the bottom of the third after falling behind the count 2-0.

Dominguez, who went 3 for 4 in Thursday's loss to San Francisco, followed with his first major league home run, a towering shot to left field to tie the game.

?We were trying to give us a spark,? Dominguez said of the back-to-back homers.

Dominguez said he plans to give the home run ball to his parents.

?It was awesome,? Dominguez said. ?To finally get one, it's kind of a relief to get it out of the way.?

It was all the Astros would muster against Leake (7-8), who won his second straight in as many starts.

Miguel Cairo and Heisey drove in runs in the eighth for the Reds, both charged to Astros reliever Wesley Wright.

Brett Wallace doubled off Alfredo Simon and scored on a Jimmy Paredes sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to get the Astros within six.

NOTES: Cincinnati manager Dusty Baker didn't rule out the possibility of Joey Votto rejoining the team this weekend. But Baker said he'd prefer Votto make his return from two surgical procedures on his left knee next week. Votto is currently on a rehabilitation assignment at Class-A Dayton. ... Houston traded OF Ben Francisco to Tampa Bay for a player to be named later during the game. ... Astros SS Marwin Gonzalez will be out indefinitely after an MRI showed a torn ligament in his left ankle, which he injured in Thursday's loss to the San Francisco Giants. DeFrancesco said Gonzalez will not require surgery.

Romney to prepare for fall debates

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney plans to spend three days next week preparing for the fall debates.

Romney spokesman Kevin Madden on Saturday said Ohio Sen. Rob Portman will join Romney in Reading, Vt., for sessions at the home of Massachusetts' former lieutenant governor, Kerry Healey. Romney has been reading briefing books and doing other work ahead of the three planned one-on-one debates with President Barack Obama. Portman also played the role of Obama for 2008 Republican nominee John McCain and has been studying material sent from Romney's Boston headquarters.

Romney will prepare as Democrats gather at their convention in Charlotte, N.C. Obama spent the week of the Republican National Convention campaigning in three swing states.

Irrive turns social photos and checkins into an instant trip scrapbook ...

With so many different photo and social networks out there, our digital memories are usually all over the place and out of sync on a variety of different services. Irrive gathers these things into a single product that makes it easy to share single events across the web.

Next week you?re going to start hearing more about this very cool new service called Irrive. It?s aimed at giving users a way to streamline all their photos, status updates and checkins that are currently distributed across multiple services into a single, shareable unit. The best application is sharing memories from a trip. With Irrive you can create, in just a few minutes, a beautiful trip scrapbook and slideshow that is easily shareable online. Irrive is currently in private beta, but is set to open up more widely after Labor Day.

Irrive is the latest startup from New York entrepreneur Steven Cohn, who started BuyYourFriendaDrink.com and sold it to Living Social in 2009. This next venture is still in the social space, but it?s aimed at helping users seamlessly and easily share big life events, especially trips, instead of a beer. The idea, he says, is that we have all these great memories that we want to share, but the record of them is usually all over the place, out of sync, and easily lost. (There is something like this already for gathering info about your friend?s trips, using Tripl, but Irrive is focused on scrapbooking your own trip.)

?The current sharing platforms, Facebook, Twitter, Foursquare, Instagram, etc. are basicaly all feed-based products. You share in the moment and it kind of goes to the bottom of the feed and the moment is lost,? Cohn said in a phone call last month. ?You miss your friends? updates sometimes because it goes to the bottom of the feed and it comes in bits and pieces and it loses context.?

And that?s not really how we tell life stories, he argues. We tell them in a streamlined manner. That?s the aim of Irrive. ?If you think about it,? he added, ?when you get back from a trip, you go to lunch with a friend and they say, ?How was your trip?? You tell them in a story format.?

I love travel and I get to write about travel tools and services quite a bit. But Irrive is one of my new favorites. Here?s why:

It?s stupidly easy to use.?I tested it out with my April trip to Greece. All I had to do once signed up was connect Irrive to any of the following accounts: Facebook, Instagram, Foursquare, Flickr and Twitter. To create a new scrapbook, simply give Irrive the dates of your trip. From there it will automatically suck in any update, status, photo or check-in uploaded during those dates. If you want to delete any of the ones Irrive finds from your scrapbook, you can. You can add itinerary details too ? just forward any airline, hotel or restaurant reservations or ticket email to a special Irrive address and the information will be filled into your scrapbook.

It gives needed context to a singular event or experience.?I don?t put everything on Instagram because I have random followers who I don?t think need that level of detail about my travels or life. But I also don?t put everything on Facebook for fear of spamming close friends with a stream of my trip photos in their News Feed. Irrive fills in those blanks and captures everything that happened in one place and gives it the context of a single event. This is sorely missing today, and it?s why I liked the idea of Kullect ? adding context ? but Irrive is so much more effortless on the part of the user, which is key.

It lets you share beyond the confines of each social service. Not all of the people who care about my travels and important life events, like family and close friends, are following me on all these services I use ? my dad is on Facebook, but my mom isn?t. My husband doesn?t use Instagram. None of my family is on Foursquare or Twitter. But in approximately 10 minutes I can collect everything that happened on a trip or over a period of time and show real-life important people what I experienced through an emailed link ? which everyone can easily access.

It makes a scrapbook and trip slideshow super simple.?You actually end up with a tangible product once each time you compile a trip. You don?t have to do anything to make the slideshow ? Irrive builds it for you automatically. If you want, you can decide to add or subtract images, and add music. But it?s optional. And it literally takes like 10 minutes max to do all of this. iPhoto for iOS has a great Journal feature that will automatically turn your photos into scrapbooks, with maps, dates, memories, weather, etc. But it?s based mainly on photos, and it?s not naturally social.

Irrive is not an app yet ? it?s built for the web using HTML5. It was a conscious decision by Cohn and his team to go to the web first, so anyone you?re friends with on Irrive can see and comment regardless of the device they?re using (if you mark it as public). Any user you invite can comment on your scrapbook memories too, even if they?re marked private.

This is cool as is, but the seven-person team behind Irrive is just getting started. Though it?s a sharing and organizing tool for your digital memories now, Cohen says there?s more to come and eventually it?s going to move into more of a planning tool too.

Don't limit consumer choice, says Samsung as Apple targets Galaxy SIII, Note

Fresh from its $1 billion court victory, Apple has now filed a patent suit against other Samsung products, including its flagship smartphone Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note.

Fresh from its $1 billion court victory, Apple has now filed a patent suit against other Samsung products, including its flagship smartphone Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note.

SEOUL: Samsung on Saturday accused Apple of resorting to litigation in an effort to limit consumer choice after the iPhone maker said it was seeking to stop the sale of Galaxy S III smartphones in the United States.

Fresh from its $1 billion court victory over Samsung Electronics Co, Apple Inc., in a separate case, asked a federal district court in San Jose, California, on Friday to add four more products to a list of Samsung goods that Apple says infringe its patents.

The new list of 21 products includes Samsung's flagship smartphone Galaxy S III as well as the Galaxy Note, another popular Android phone. If the court finds those devices are infringing Apple's patents and irreparably harming the U.S. company, it could temporarily halt sales in the U.S. market even before the trial begins.

The latest accusation is part of a larger, epic struggle over patents and innovation in one of the most lucrative consumer electronics sectors that is unfolding in 10 countries.

The biggest stakes are in the U.S., the world's largest smartphone market in 2011. Last month, a jury in the San Jose court found that Samsung had copied Apple's design innovations and Samsung was ordered to pay Apple $1.05 billion. Samsung has vowed to appeal the verdict, all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court if necessary.

On Saturday, Samsung denounced Apple's attempt to halt sales of the S III, which hit the 10 million global sales mark in July, less than three months after its release.

``Apple continues to resort to litigation over market competition in an effort to limit consumer choice,'' Samsung said in a statement. ``We will continue to take the necessary legal measures to ensure the availability of our innovative products in the United States.''

The strong sales of the S III were crucial in driving Samsung's quarterly profit to a record high in the last quarter and helped it stay ahead in the worldwide smartphone market.

In documents filed with San Jose federal district court on Friday, Apple said 21 Samsung smartphones, media players and tablets released after August 2011 were ``copycat products.''

``Rather than innovate and develop its own technology and a unique Samsung style for its smartphone and tablet computer products, Samsung has chosen to copy Apple's technology, user interface, and innovative style,'' Apple said in one document.

The Cupertino, California-based company claimed that Samsung is illegally using its eight patents. One patent is related to the way the device retrieves information in a computer system and another is about gestures on a touchscreen display to unlock a device.

Apple and Samsung are the world's two largest smartphone makers and together they control over half of the global market. They are embroiled in similar legal tussles in Asia, Europe and the United States.

In April 2011, Apple first accused Samsung of illegally copying Apple's design and technology in the smartphones powered by Google Inc.'s Android technology. Samsung countersued, arguing Apple's iPhone and iPad used its wireless technology without permission.

Presidential Proclamation -- National Ovarian Cancer Awareness ...

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release

August 31, 2012

?

NATIONAL OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, 2012

?

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

?

A PROCLAMATION

?

This year, thousands of American women will lose their lives to ovarian cancer. ?They are mothers and daughters, sisters and grandmothers, community members and cherished friends -- and the absence they leave in our hearts will be deeply felt forever. ?During National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, we honor those we have lost, show our support for women who bravely carry on the fight, and take action to lessen the tragic toll ovarian cancer takes on families across our Nation.

?

Sadly, women are all too often diagnosed with this disease when it has already reached an advanced stage. ?Because early detection is the best defense against ovarian cancer, it is essential that women know the risk factors associated with the disease. ?Women who are middle-aged or older, who have a family history of ovarian or breast cancer, or who have had certain cancers in the past are at increased risk of developing ovarian cancer. ?Any woman who thinks she is at risk of ovarian cancer ? ?or who experiences symptoms, including abdominal pain, pressure, or swelling -- should talk with her health care provider. ?To learn more, visit www.Cancer.gov.

?

Ongoing progress in science and medicine is moving us forward in the battle against ovarian cancer, and my Administration remains committed to improving outcomes for women suffering from this devastating illness. ?Through agencies across the Federal Government, we are continuing to invest in research that paves the way for a new generation of tests and treatments. ?Through the Centers for Disease Control's Inside Knowledge campaign, we are working to raise awareness about the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer. ?The Affordable Care Act already bans insurance companies from dropping a woman's coverage because she has ovarian cancer, and from placing lifetime or restrictive annual dollar limits on her coverage. ?Beginning in 2014, the law will also prohibit insurers from denying coverage or charging higher premiums because a woman has ovarian cancer -- or any other pre-existing condition.

?

Ovarian cancer affects the lives of far too many women every year, and the tragedy it leaves in its wake reverberates in communities across our country. ?This month, we stand with all those who have known the pain of ovarian cancer, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of new and better ways to prevent, detect, and treat this devastating disease.

?

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 2012 as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. ?I call upon citizens, government agencies, organizations, health care providers, and research institutions to raise ovarian cancer awareness and continue helping Americans live longer, healthier lives. ?I also urge women across our country to talk to their health care providers and learn more about this disease.

?

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty first day of August, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

?

BARACK OBAMA
