Apple's war with Google heats up

When Apple kicks off its annual conference for software developers on Monday, all the power players in the Apple universe will be on hand, save the one that is in many ways driving the agenda: Google.

More than ever, the consumer electronics juggernaut finds itself in a pitched battle with the online search giant ? in smartphones, cloud computing and the never-ending competition for the hearts and minds of the best software developers.

Apple on Monday is expected to announce its own mapping application, challenging the position of Google Maps as one of the most-valued features on the iPhone. It will unveil closer integration of its iPhone apps and iCloud storage service with all its devices, the latest riposte in its battle with Google's Android smartphone software.

It may promote the latest in Siri, the voice interface that the company thinks can continue to set the iPhone and the iPad apart from the Android pack.?

And there will likely be a new line of Macintosh laptops too ? underscoring the leverage that a full line of hardware products can bring to what is mainly a software war with Google.

Apple is looking to differentiate its mobile devices from Google's Android by further enticing consumers deeper into its app ecosystem, said Carolina Milanesi, analyst at Gartner Research.

"It's all about loyalty and basically leveraging the opportunity of selling more to them," she said. "I don't think the consumers in the mass market are necessarily tied into the Android ecosystem in the same way that consumers on the Apple side are."

Battling in many arenas, the rivals employ different weapons. Apple's vise-like grip on its ecosystem ? with the closely managed app store and its seamless integration with the hardware ? stands in sharp contrast to Google's free-for-all approach.

The open system approach, reminiscent of Microsoft's hugely successful strategy of creating standard-setting software that runs on a variety of hardware, has allowed Android to capture the market lead in smartphones (albeit with nothing close to Apple's profit margins).

Android has also helped create several potent hardware rivals to Apple. Samsung Electronics' Android-driven Galaxy S?III is drawing favorable comparisons to iPhone and Amazon.com's cheaper Kindle Fire is challenging Apple in tablets and digital content.

Apple's expected move to replace Google Maps with its own mapping application is a particularly dramatic example of how the rivalry between the companies has been evolving.

Google has invested huge sums in its mapping technology over the years, and about half of its map traffic now comes from iPhones and iPads. Among other things, the traffic from those devices reveals valuable location data that helps improve the mapping service and provides features like real-time traffic reports.

Apple has spent three years preparing to take mapping back. It has integrated technology from acquisitions such as 3-D mapping company C3 Technologies, Canadian startup Poly9 Group and mapping service Placebase, said ISI analyst Brian Marshall.

"As Apple builds out its Siri service, they build out the iCloud infrastructure and more capability into its operating system, location data is going to become important," said Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu.

"This could help their advertising business too."

Google's pre-emptive strike
In what was seen as a pre-emptive move against Apple's upcoming maps service, Google on Wednesday showed off its own mapping capabilities, including soon-to-be-launched 3-D features.?

While Google executives avoided any comment on the possibility of being ousted as a default service on Apple devices, one executive said the integration with Google's search engine provides a mapping service that is far more useful than a product that simply uses a "geocoder.

Apple began to use its own geocoder ? technology that uses geographic coordinates to create a digital map ? for the Google-based maps on its smartphones late last year, a move that was seen as a precursor to Apple using its own map software.

Another software upgrade that fans and developers are hoping for is Siri, a popular voice-enabled personal assistant service that Google has yet to match.

The service could come out of its beta testing phase and show up on the iPad when Apple unveils iOS6 or the next version of its mobile operating software.

Siri, which has been plagued with connectivity and other issues, is still in beta test version.

Apple's global war on Google and Android in the courts is one sign of how seriously it is taking the potential threat. The consumer device giant is seeing limited success, though, in courtrooms for various patent infringement cases it has against Android manufacturers.

Apple said this week it is mulling a legal order to stop the U.S. launch of Samsung Galaxy S III phone later this month. Samsung is one of the biggest Android phone manufacturers.

In another of the many lawsuits worldwide pitting Apple against Motorola Mobility, now owned by Google, a federal judge canceled a scheduled trial as neither could prove damages. That decision particularly hurts Apple because the iPhone maker was seeking an injunction barring the sale of Android products, said Brian Love, a professor at Stanford Law School.

"The Android side is likely thrilled to simply have the case go away," Love said.

Apple declined to comment on the case.

MacBook redesign in the works
?Where Apple has the upper hand is in its hardware ? groundbreaking in design, vastly popular with consumers for its ease of use.

The redesigned MacBook laptops to hit the stage next week are expected to include high-definition screens and Intel Corp's Ivy Bridge cutting-edge processors. Some even expect the iPad's "retina" display to show up on the MacBook line.

This would be Apple's first big redesign of the MacBook Pro since mid-2009. With the new lineup, it hopes to fend off budding competition from rival manufacturers who are pushing a spate of new, thinner laptops called "Ultrabooks."

Windows 8, a new version of Microsoft's flagship operating system that runs on tablet computers as well as PCs, will bolster PC makers' ability to offer premier computers rivaling Apple's MacBook line.?(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal.)

Already, about 20 touch-enabled ultrabook designs with various styles of foldable, detachable or sliding keyboards running the new Windows 8 system are in the pipeline.?

The MacBook line generated 13 percent, or about $5 billion, of Apple's fiscal second-quarter revenue. Unit sales of the aging lineup were up 7 percent from the previous year but were down 23 percent sequentially.?

Whatever the case, Apple fans and partners can look forward to a fairly action-packed week.?

"Apple is very serious about getting far in front of Windows 8 and Ultrabooks," said Barclays analyst Ben Reitzes. But "software and services will be the focus, with major enhancements to Maps, iCloud and Siri, which developers and users can take advantage of."?

This collection, Morisstte?s debut, is told with a lyrical precision that cuts right to the heart of multiple modern problems including anxiety, social networks, and the internet at large. At just over a hundred pages, the collection is short but doesn?t lack for plenty of emotionally honest and intellectually intriguing mome

nts. Being more of a fan of fiction, I steered towards the stories but his poetry had this weird ability to flow over me, cancelling out any preconceived notions of what a poem is and isn?t.

At times depressing yet still with a hopeful twinge, Morissette?s collection shuffles from despair to comedy in single paragraphs. This book has a little something for everyone (clich? but true.) Style, a unique voice, a vice grip command of language, pacing and structure, I Am My Own Betrayal is the future now. Morissette gives the reader the room to breathe and co-exist with his words, almost instantly producing a feeling of deep empathy and/or connectedness while also maintaining control of the larger picture and leading the reader on an eerily calming and insanely provocative ride.

Halfway through my first read I needed to take a break. Not because it was bad. Quite the opposite; the words moved me, brought me to the point where I felt the need to reassess my own existence. I felt like I?d just went through a marathon therapy session with someone who was infinitely smarter than me.

I read the book three times over the course of a week. I was planning on taking notes in the margins, a habit of mine, but instead I found myself underlining sentences and phrases like a mad man. His writing, when it didn?t make me pause and think, left me feeling like a drooling idiot, amazed at how he constructed sentences, how he put together ideas. For a while there I felt like I was in on a secret, like his writing was speaking out, reaching for me and only me.

With dialogue that is brutally minimalistic yet able to manufacture a deeper set of feelings and an astute eye for highlighting the everyday details that most of us blindly gloss over, Morissette has created a vision so crystal clear that I was left elevated.

It?s really hard to explain but reading this book took me back to when I was a boy and my father explained the game of baseball to me for the first time. At first it was confusing and I was just happy to be included, to be let in on this grown up thing that so many people felt so passionately about. Soon, as I grew more confident, I came to relish the inner workings of a beautifully executed double play or a hitter moving the runner over. After reading I Am My Own Betrayal I felt like that young boy again and that was well worth the read.

Fans of top-quality automotive artwork the world over have the Automotive Fine Arts Society to thank for legitimizing the automobile as a proper?subject for fine art. Few places in the world celebrate the automobile as art better than the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance, held every August in Pebble Beach, California.

Following previous practice, AFAS artists have created the offical posters for the Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance and the Pebble Beach Tour d?Elegance and will, for the 27th year, display their paintings and sculptures and other works of automotive-inspired art at the concours on August 19.

AFAS member Charles Maher will debut his new piece, From the Valley of the Kings, above, at?the concours. A 30- x 71-inch acrylic triptych on canvas, From the Valley of the Kings features a 1938 Mercedes-Benz Autobahn Kurier, which was built on a 540K supercharged chassis in the Sindelfingen, Germany,?coachbuilding facility. As the last of only six made, the car enjoyed an extended tour from Spain through North Africa, crossing Libya and into Egypt. The Mercedes was then shipped from Alexandria to Barcelona and was extensively driven through Austria and Switzerland.

?The Pebble Beach Concours d?Elegance is an event that exudes excellence,? Maher said. ?It was fitting to create a work of art that embodied the same spirit. With its fascinating, globe-trotting story, the extremely rare 1938 Mercedes Benz Autobahn Kurier is an automobile that Pebble Beach Concours patrons will enjoy seeing on canvas.?

The title of the piece is inspired by the car?s time in Egypt. The background evokes Maxfield Parrish?s influence with an Austrian-Swiss Alps setting, tying together crucial moments in this vehicle?s history.

Maher?s works can also be seen at this year?s?Concours d?Elegance at Ault Park, where he will be the featured artist. He will also exhibit at the Keeneland Concours d?Elegance in Lexington, Kentucky, the Concours d?Elegance of America at St. John?s in Plymouth, Michigan, and the Glenmoor Gathering in Canton, Ohio.

Barry Rowe?s atmospheric Bugatti period piece will be showcased during the Tour d?Elegance.

Jay Koka?s dynamic Ferrari?painting will be one of those pieces displayed at the concours.

Google Maps for Android gets offline support, 'nothing to announce' regarding version compatibility

Google's Maps event has just given us a much-requested feature: true offline map support. Android users can soon opt to download full maps for given areas (instead of just caching routes) without needing a cellular or WiFi connection. It's a big boon for those of us who have to travel abroad to unfamiliar cities, or just to areas where underground tunnels might cut off Internet access before GPS. Unfortunately, that's all that Google was willing to share: Android phones and tablets will only be getting the upgrade sometime "soon." Still, that's one less advantage for Nokia Drive, and one more hurdle to jump for Apple at WWDC next week.

Update: We just followed up with Peter Birch following the keynote regarding version compatibility for offline and 3D Maps, and were told that Google "has nothing to announce at this time," but will do so in the coming weeks. We prodded a bit to see if 2.x devices would be in the mix, and all we got was a non-confirming reply about an "assumption" that if Google Maps Navigation is supported, offline and 3D would be as well.

Afghan government praises dead British soldier

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The Afghan government on Monday praised a British soldier who was killed by militants during a successful mission to rescue a kidnapped Afghan police officer.

The policeman was abducted Sunday evening from a checkpoint in southern Helmand province's Nahri Sarraj district, said the provincial governor's office.

British forces recovered the kidnapped policeman, but one of their soldiers was killed and another wounded, the U.S.-led NATO coalition said, without providing further details.

Helmand Governor Gulab Mangal offered his condolences for the death of the British soldier and said local residents would never forget the sacrifices of British forces.

The death increased the number of British personnel to die in Afghanistan since 2001 to 417. Britain has about 9,500 troops in Afghanistan, most of them in Helmand.

The insurgents who killed the British officer during the rescue mission managed to escape, NATO said. Security forces seized explosives, documents and one of their mobile phones.

Britain's military said Sunday that a U.K. soldier was shot to death by insurgents in Nahri Sarraj district. The British Ministry of Defense declined to provide the circumstances surrounding the death of the soldier from 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment, until his family had been offered a more detailed account.

Maurice Lim Miller: Investing in Homegrown Solutions

When my organization, the Family Independence Initiative, was considering starting a project in Boston to partner with low-income families, I was told numerous stories of some of the tougher neighborhoods where unemployment is high, people do not venture out of their apartments at night, they distrust the police, they have no place to buy food and the schools are failing. To drive home the point I was told that 50 percent of the kids don't graduate from high school. Given these terrible conditions, I wanted to know how it is that 50 percent of the kids do manage to graduate? No one knew; no one had bothered to ask.

There is such a strong stereotype about the nation's poor -- that being low-income means being broken -- that no one is interested or even willing to consider and learn from the low-income families who activate their resourcefulness and know-how to solve their own problems. Why? Because policy makers, funders and advocates don't believe families like that exist. The stereotype of poor people as incapable is so entrenched that it is impossible for most to see how low-income families are really like the rest of us, just with less money and fewer connections. And as a result, we cut ourselves off from an entire approach that can springboard mobility -- investing directly in solutions generated and led by families themselves.

Learning from Families

In order for our nation to effectively break the cycle of poverty, not simply create new programs to ameliorate harsh conditions, we need to take the blinders off, to dispense with the stereotypes, and ask the low-income families who are beating the odds jut how they are doing it. Then we need to follow through to support those effective solutions.

I've brought up the example about kids graduating despite difficult circumstances numerous times to funders, policy, and program people. Everyone in the room always nods in agreement and then resumes crafting institutional solutions. We are missing an opportunity. If our sector would pause to learn from the families that are overcoming the odds, we would find impressive and powerful solutions involving relationships between friends and neighbors -- not expensive professional interventions -- that are already having an impact.

Resourceful Family-led Solutions

Two rival youth discovered they were related to each other and other youth learned of their cultural connections. Community bonds began growing in the place of conflict and cultural pride in the place of disconnection. The parents, who shared concerns about lack of alternatives for their youth, built a community center as a place to come together to celebrate cultural traditions and also began a college scholarship fund. As families donated even the smallest amounts, the youth learned there was both the expectation and the real possibility of college.

At the other end of the city in West Oakland, a group of African American families teach their children about their history through literature, art, and music. These families had come together to create arts programs for youth in their community, not only to offer the youth more structured activities but to build pride in their African roots, its arts and traditions. They built a cultural exchange with like-minded families in New Orleans, many of whom were housed and helped by the West Oakland group after Katrina. Many of the children of these families are now beating the odds to graduate high school and go on to college.

These groups exemplify efforts that deserve recognition and resources, yet they are largely ignored by the countless foundation and government projects that have been layered onto low-income communities in Oakland.

Homegrown Financial Solutions

Many neighborhood groups that synthesize trusting connections also come together to address the problem of limited financial access, for those who are either unbanked or who find the credit doors at mainstream banks closed. Communities across the country are developing informal lending circles to fill the gap for very small personal loans that microfinance and banks do not address.

In Boston, a group of families who emigrated from Colombia started a social club in the tradition of Latin American Natilleras. They began creating activities for their youth and launched fundraising for individual contributions to build a lending pool that is available to everyone in the group. They distributed the funds before Christmas; it is their own lay-away plan. What started as a handful of families now involves over 30 families and growing.

In another part of Boston, a mixed group of friends created an LLC (a limited liability corporation) to formalize an investment pool initially started by a few families. Families make monthly contributions and the company has so far bought one business, a cab company, in order to create jobs for themselves and their families. What began as a small group now numbers over 60 investors.

If efforts of groups of families and friends were recognized by funding institutions and the group investment was matched, these from-the-ground-up solutions could become engines of economic change on a broader scale.

Invest in Success

Alana, a woman in the West Oakland group, and her friends had kids who did manage to graduate high school despite the odds. Although Alana worked long hours, her friends helped watch over her kids, and together Alana and her friends shared a strong expectation that their kids graduate. They tried to share their success with other families by establishing a small community center, but this homegrown effort couldn't compete for grants against the professionally run programs in their community.

From New Orleans to Albuquerque, Boston to Eureka, Calif., I have learned of many informal groups that are strengthening their communities and solving decades-old problems by self-organizing. They create successful small businesses, after school programs, and methods to share financial resources. The projects undertaken by these groups are effective and relevant because they are being generated from within the community. And most importantly, they build the sense of leadership, pride, and agency that is necessary for communities to sustain their efforts and challenge the status quo.

But many of these groups have limited access to resources because they are not institutions, not run by professionals, and are outside of the traditional funding process.

Highlighting Resident-led Solutions

In 2010, I was fortunate to be invited to sit on the White House Council for Community Solutions. As the Council nears the end of its tenure, it is submitting final recommendations to the President. Its report will highlight the Torchlight Prize, a national award established this year by FII. We launched this prize to spotlight the work of regular people - like the Iu Mien community in Richmond and Oakland, the African-American artists in Oakland and New Orleans, and the social club in Boston -- who join together to better their communities. We want those who care about supporting low-income communities to invest directly in groups like the Torchlight Prize winners. We also hope to inspire more actions, led by friends and families, to impact their own lives. By overcoming the negative stereotyping of low-income families, we can turn to the capacity and ability that is already vital and blooming in so many low-income communities.
